Hello! Do I belong here?

Hello everyone!
I'm Daisy
This is a very lovely group of people. I've actually been here before, but it's been a while and under a different account name.
I'm wondering, do I fit in this group? I'm not currently interested in becoming a children's book illustrator. I'm more interested in maintaining a shop and a Patreon, possibly in creating a self published comic book in the future. So I am interested in visual story telling, but not the children's book kind. I've also been binge listening to 3 Point Perspective so I've been encouraged to come back here. But I'm worried my style doesn't fit in and I don't want to waste anyone's time.
Would you mind giving me your thoughts?
Here's a Studio Ghibli study I did. Thanks for your time!

Helloo ! I'm pretty sure you will feel at home here even if you want to do comics. There is also comics classes by Jake Parker on SVS. Also for your shop and Patreon you will likely create some illustrations so I don't see why not !! Welcome, beautiful study by the way.
-
@Daisy-Muradyan of course you fit in! These are art and illustration courses. We are artists and illustrators and some growing writers lols. You can share your knowledge and your work with us. The monthly contests are not just for children book illustrators, we have had some more editorial work. There are also people interested in comics after all Jake Parker is a comic artist.
-
@Daisy-Muradyan the forum is not really exclusive for childrenโs book illustrators. Anyone whoโs into visual storytelling can join. Weโd be happy to help.
-
@Daisy-Muradyan Welcome Daisy! You'll fit right in We're all into slightly different things, but we all help each other with art! Maintaining a shop is one of my main interests as well! I have a clipart shop on Etsy that I started this year. I'm a full time freelance artist right now, but my ultimate dream is to grow my shop until I can do it full time

Welcome! Glad you decided to join us. It is great to have diverse voices in the crowd.

If you make art, you belong here
-
Welcome Daisy! I love your Miyazaki study!
-
@Daisy-Muradyan welcome back and yes you belong. We all belong LOL. But for real, my style is not childrens book either but there are so many great artists here that are willing to help and supply great feedback!
-
Hi @Daisy-Muradyan I'm also not currently on a children's book path and would love to make my own comic book. This forum is a melting pot for art.
-
Hello Daisy! I'm in the same boat but have felt at home here! I started SVS for the inking classes and found many more that apply to comic and graphic novel illustration. Maybe we can start an ongoing forum for the people interested in this catagory?
-
Yes! Welcome back.
-
Hey @Daisy-Muradyan welcome back! I too am not necessarily interested in Childrens books illustration... to be honest I'm not totally sure where I fit in, but so far I've found that it's really nice just to be around other artists, and most of the principles apply no matter who you're making art for.
-
Thanks everyone!
And I didn't know there was a comic book class here! -
I dont think you need another person to tell you that you totes belong here! But welcome back anyway!
-
I really like your study from Miyazaki! Nicely done. I too feel like this isn't exactly the place I "belong" at least in terms of my primary industry (greeting cards). But I think this is just a misconception based on some things I hear in the podcast. It's certainly most tailored for picture book illustrators.
I discovered SVS while illustrating my first children's picture book for a client, and it helped me so much that even though I'm not currently illustrating books, SVS is a great place to grow as an artist and learn more about the business angle too. I may someday illustrate another book or use illustrations in greeting cards, too, so the applications of these skills are endless.
-
@Amanda-Bancroft yes! I think I understand you. This feels like a great place, but I'm concerned it's not "for me" since I'm not doing children's books. But I'm sure there are great principles here that can be applied in many art-related areas, so I'm gonna stick around and see

Welcome back @Daisy of course you do! The more variety of artists the more things to share! ๏ธ

@Daisy this forum is good for anyone who practices art. I am primarily an art teacher and I use all that I am learning to help my students with their own art. The forum also gives me like minded people who encourage me and challenge me in my art which up until recently did not include any children's illustrations. I did portraits and dabbled in comic book art and novel writing. Even so, it was a big help because art principles apply across all the genres of art.
