Hi everyone! For April's contest results I decided to do something a little different. I decided to do a video critique of all 58 entries! Whew! Not easy and I'm losing my voice from it, but it was so great to see all the wonderful work that you guys did!
The crit video is FREE for anyone to view and can be seen here:
https://courses.svslearn.com/courses/april-contest-critiques
If you are an svs member or have been in the past, just login with your regular login info. If you aren't a subscriber and don't have an account on our class site, you can sign into a new account for free. You just have to make up a user name and password.
Hope you guys like the crits as much as I liked seeing all your work. I ask a lot of questions in the crits and ask students to try different things. I'd love to hear what you think of any of the suggestions I had. : )
Cheers,
Lee -
WOW!! I thought you were kidding at first, @Lee-White ! That is amazing! Thank you.
-
@Lee-White The videos crits are awesome - thanks for pouring that much time and energy in! In image ten it is a bit hard to read but is the monster holding cymbals and getting ready to wake up the little boy?
-
@Amber-Lynn-Benton Ahhh, that makes so much more sense now!!!
-
@Lee-White I bet you feel like you just ran a visual marathon!
-
@Amber-Lynn-Benton . Yes! That is my image. I thought the cymbals were obvious, but now I can see they were not. They definitely need more detail but since I wanted to keep the room dark, I lost a lot of information.
Something to think about in the future. -
@Lee-White Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you liked my image :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_smiling_eyes:

@burvantill After listening to the AWESOME SAUCE critique yesterday I have applied most of @Lee-White 's recommendations. I have removed/lightened the pencil lines in the mountains, increased contrast throughout and changed the colors of the boys clothes in the back. The reason they were all the same is because they are boy scouts in their type B uniform, but the masses don't know about that so, since this is not a BSA illustration it is wise to have their outfits be dissimilar. I did not move the "boy on the hat" because I would have had to repaint it, but I will keep that type of juxtaposition in mind moving forward.
Before & After
-
@burvantill Great changes! I got the scout references since I wash about a dozen class B shirts every week, lol!
-
@Amber-Lynn-Benton
Right! We are out of scouts now, but ah the memories! -
@Lee-White - I didn't submit to the April contest but greatly appreciate the feedback you provided the other artists, as it really helped me develop a criteria for my own work. I always appreciate the extra time you take to mentor, thank you!
-
@djly thanks! it's always my pleasure to see the work you guys do!
-
@Lee-White sorry i might have missed it. Was there a winner for the “Moment Before” prompt? Or because our gift was the great collection of critiques it was decided that there will be no winner announcements for that month?
-
@Aleksey no winner due to the video critiques.
-
@Heather-Boyd cool ty for clarifying
-
I just saw this post today about your video critiques of all of the submissions.
I was captivated by your suggestions to each image and watched the whole thing through.
Thank you very much on the critique, I do use traditional mediums as this point and I am investigating digital formats to bring my work to the next level and hopefully increase interest in my work for children's illustration.Jessica Jolicoeur
