Painting colour and light 2.0 Group run through week one!
-
Hello ladies and gents!
Here's the thread for the week one group runthrough of painting colour and light 2.0!
Everyone's welcome to participate, but in order to have access to the classes and homework you need an SVS subscription. It's worth it.
Feel free to do digital or traditional. It's all good.
SO we're gonna do things a little out of order. Assignment one in the homework bundle is to collect reference of different lighting situations, but in order to find those lighting situations we need to know what they are.
This week!
Watch:
- All videos in 'using and collecting reference' (They're short)
- Lighting situations under the 'lighting situations' lesson. (longer, but it's handy to know what we're looking for)
Homework:
- Collect reference!!!
- Gather at least one reference for each lighting situation listed in exercise 09 of the workbook.
Super extra special credit assignment:
- Refer to exercise 05 in the workbook and gather one example of each source.
Gathering reference and using it is probably the one thing that I don't do that I really really should. It's a heck of a lot easier to paint something if you know what it looks like!
Feel free to post links or examples of the reference you find/make! Working together we should be able to come up with more than enough references to make painting different lighting situations a whole lot easier.
Have fun! I think this'll help us all to level up

@Braden-Hallett Yay, I just submitted my last assignment for the semester in grad school so I can play now! Perfect timing to get more homework from you! (But this is great fin for me so it is not really work, per se)
-
Looking forward and seems reasonable to even less homework than expected for week 1. Excited because my colour is close to real and not based on mood and atmosphere which I would love to play with and to get lighting more with variety!
Also love the new works on your site, the kids at their desks has a lot of interest and humour.
Thanks,
-
I will join you! I don't practice enough. I have the workbook but I'm going to go back and watch the videos again. My biggest weakness is that I watch the videos, gather references and sort everything into neat folders and then never actually practice. [shame]
Looking up "color keys" to your favorite animated movies is a great way to collect lighting references. -
I'm in....

@Heather-Boyd Nice! I always forget how awesome Pinterest is for this kind of thing. I guess if we all get boards going we can kinda pick and choose what we like from each other and just pin each others pins or something, yeah?

and then never actually practice.
I always diligently practice, but I never take the time to collect and use reference, lol.

@Braden-Hallett I've been "away" for a bit with life and today is I think my last day subbing to SVS, but now I might sub again mostly because of this lol. Maybe SVS should take note?! These classes you're running keep people in.....I was toying with it but this sort of thing may have sealed the deal. I'm contemplating a full year actually, have $ towards my christmas present and I can't afford a live class which I would like! But this seems really great.

When I found images that were hard to place because they could be one Lighting situation or another I just copied them and put them in both . I have a lot of duplicates

@Coley I have yet to do a live class maybe in a year or two they are expensive but rightly so for what we get. Year sub is worth it though especially the larger higher priced classes. Hope to see your colour and light homework.
-
@Heather-Boyd I just today got my first ever paying illustration gig So it will cover the cost of the sub (and then some) . yay!
-
@Coley fantastic congrats!

Three cheers for pinterest

I've been trying to do this using my own photos and, while they're not brilliantly artistic shots, I'm surprised at how many of the lighting situations I can cover.
I don't think I want to put them on Pinterest as there are quite a few with friends' kids, etc. so currently figuring out the best way to organise on my PC.
However, I will share that I once managed to capture one of those spheres illustrators are always drawing, out in the wild:
-
Here's what I have so far - getting there a bit late

I'm going to just keep setting up sub-sections under the lighting category so this should grow in the next few days.
-
I'va also started to collect from my private photos ... Having the same problem as @neschof: Too many of my kids. Too many bums I'll sort those out and share the rest with you. And I'm getting distracted with those photos all the time. I havn't seen them for ages.
-
I started a Pinterest board. Feel free to pin from my board:

@neschof The sphere... It haunts me...
-
REPIN PARTYYYYYYYY! Or something like that We'll all have awesome reference libraries from out collected research.
@Meta @neschof Feel free to share only if you're totally comfortable I totally understand not wanting personal photos on the interwebs

@Braden-Hallett
If you know doctor who with David tenant and Billie Piper in the episode called the Army of Ghosts check out the implications of that sphere haha!
