Octopus ideas, help me choose
-
I did some brainstorming on the Octopus theme for this month's challenge, and these two are my favorite, but I'm having trouble deciding which one to continue with. Let me know your thoughts!
-
Octopus zeppelin making a delivery.
-
It's Familiar Adoption Day for the local school of witchcraft. This will be a busy pet shop with the focus on the girl choosing an octopus for her companion instead of the standard cat or raven. This one could also be a Draw 50 Things challenge.

Both sketches look awesome! I think you have 2 great ideas. I think I like the story of the little witch picking out a new pet the best, but that is probably just because I like little witch stories. Good luck! I can't wait to see what you decide.
-
I'm a fan of the first one, it really makes the Octopus a big focal point.
-
Love the first one. Has an epic adventure feel to it;)
-
@carriecopa I like the first one.
-
The first one really pops. I like it.
-
Thanks guys! I'm going to explore the first one and earmark the second idea for a future project. There is something fantastical about the sky squid, I keep coming back to it.
-
@alissaempey LOL I'm biased too, I love little witch drawings.
@carriecopa I say if you have time and are up to the challenge do the shop, but maybe pull the two main characters closer to the camera so they are the largest in the image. I like the story this sketch tells. The first one I didn't know what was going on until I read the text.
-
@carriecopa Just idea of the Fantastic Sky Squid is really awesome.
-
Aghh, this is so awesome! I was sketching out ideas for my Octopus for this months competition, and one of them was totally a octo-dirigible. I ended up going for a different concept... but I can't wait to see how yours turns out!
-
FIRST ONE!!! love the perspective there!
BTW, where are this month's challenge details? -
I choose 1.
-
@allnightdesign the theme for this month is just "octopus," with an additional hint that "illustrations with strong storytelling AND technical ability will tend to do better." The little witch idea has an obvious story, but I think the the sky squid stopping at this tall house is also a story in a way? It inspires curiosity and wonderment but doesn't overtly tell you what it's about. You get to fill in the blanks.
-
@carriecopa Love the composition of #1 and the weird juxtaposition of octopus and zeppelin. Add the interesting looking house delivery and it definitely peaks my interest and curiosity. Can't wait to see the final illo.
-
@carriecopa both look great! The sky octopus is epic and fantastic but there's something about the back end balance that seems too heavy to me. I love the second one too. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
-
So I love both of these ideas, but I am definitely partial to #2 (could be my eternal love of witches?); story telling wise I think this one could be really great. That being said, I think #1 is still worth the effort in working on, whether for the competition or just as an art piece in general. I think the idea is just too whimsical and awesome to give up.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Thanks for all your input! Lots of fans of witches here.
I probably make the witch one my "Draw 50 Things" challenge for another time. A magical menagerie sounds really fun to illustrate.
