Not really done many insect paintings so thought I would try explore some ideas for this month's contest. Chose 4 thumbnail ideas that I thought had potential and i'd like to see which you think is worth exploring further:

      1. Boy riding his own dragonfly as his friend looks up in disbelief

      2. Dragonfly catching humans that were hiding in a tree (other dragonflies chasing in the fields in the background)

      3. Dragon that's wings are too small aided in flying by many dragonflies.

      4. Family photo of some dragonflies with their son dressed up in a dragon costume.

Personally I like 1, but worried its similar to a previous painting i've done (cardboard airplanes). Any thoughts are appreciated. Determined to finish one for a change!

@Gary-Wilkinson Idea #3 gets my vote, it tells such a unique and endearing story about lifting others up haha ๐Ÿ˜Š I think children would like to put themselves in the characterโ€™s position and imagine the dragonflies helping them fly too!

These are all great concepts, so lovely! I like all the sketches. 2-3 feel like they could be a part of the same story somehow. As for the originality of the idea I like the 2 and 3 best. Why not paint both if you have the time. They would make exellent portfolio pieces. The only thing in sketch 2 that I was now thinking about is the tree on the left sort of framing the picture. Makes it feel a bit constrained compared to the free flow and feel of the other sketches.

@Gary-Wilkinson These are all adorable, but 1 and 3 have the most engaging energy and composition for me. And I agree that 3 tells a very unique and heartwarming story ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi, I like the story of #2 and #3 but #3 visually catches my eye first with "aww it is so cute that chucky dragon". #2 story and #3 story are funny, for those reasons I chose them.

#3 is pretty cool. I've gotta put my vote in for #2 though since it's so... unique (strange in a good way ๐Ÿ™‚ )

I would agree that #2 and #3 are the most promising. I know that the judges like having a funny hook in the picture. I think either of these would fit that bill.

@Gary-Wilkinson Number one grabs my eye the most. I think it is the cleanest composition, quickest read, and most appealing. Three would be my second pick but one really stands out for me... i think the joy of it may be a big part of its appeal.

@Gary-Wilkinson #3 is really charming concept though I wonder if something about it could match the dynamism of #1. #2 hilariously reminds me of something in the invader zim universe. #4 I like the idea of a costume but I feel the family portrait overshadows that focus. Not sure this helps but do whichever feels strongest in your minds eye ๐Ÿ™‚

#1 is just so lovely. Even if you donโ€™t use that one for the arena. Just print frame and put it up just like that. I think it is dope.

                                          Much love and God bless!

Thank you for all the comments and advice. No. 3 seems to be a popular choice and I quite like the cheeriness of the scene so i'll try work on that one. Did a couple of color studies that I think might work well, I think ill have quite the task illustrating the dragonflies but if I add some near the foreground it should read better.

Also thinking to add some dragons in the background with a look of confusion and anger at the happy dragon.
