Re-do an old piece
-
I am preparing my portfolio for the Bologna book fair and in the process of working and re-working a few pieces. Here is the piece I did for the SVS monthly contest this summer.
I like the concept of this illustration, but I have some problems with both the value and texture of this piece. I re-worked the value. What do you guys think?
Pitch: An unexpected fishing trip. (2 kids on a fishing trip, big fishes lurk in the forest)
keywords: looming danger, threatening, scared
-
Hi @xin-li, I like the reworked value. Thereβs danger surrounding the light. Nicely done!

@xin-li
What is the official website for the Bologna book fair? Do you know? I searched and got about a hundred and didnβt know which was the correct one. -

Here is the website:

@xin-li thankyouthankyou!!

I liked the re-worked value too.
If I squint my eyes and see the new value sketch - I can make out pointy sharp dark objects surrounding threateningly at the characters in the center . The higher contrast difference is definitely helping!
Also, I was planning a euro trip too next month and was looking forward to visiting the Bologna Book Fair (I've been working on my portfolio too!) and hopefully meet some fellow SVS members. But my stupid visa got rejected ;_; I have NO idea why. I'm appealing for it but it looks difficult. I'm so sad

@Neha-Rawat thank you so much for your feedback.
I am so sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. The world is a very strange place when you have a passport that is not from western countries. I have so many of these stressful episodes in the past. I know it is very complicated, but if by any chance you manage to go through the appealing, do let me know and we will definitely meet up at Bologna. -
Spent a perfect Saturday painting scary fish :-). Still a long way to go, but I made some progress on the drawing of the fishes and the characters. Do you think it works for the image when I included different types of fish instead?
-
@xin-li yes! Looks great
-
@xin-li I think the different types of fish add a bit more variety when the viewer looks into the shadows, looks good to me
-
@Neha-Rawat Oh no! So sorry to hear that!
-
@xin-li I like the different kinds of fish. It makes it feel like there is danger/anxiety from all quarters.

Work continues. I think I am happy with the color lay-in, ready to start paint this piece.
