Studio Makeover
So part of my new years goals was to redo my kid's old bedroom into a workable studio space. I've been working in here for a while now but it was bright orange and just really needed a deep cleaning. I have a new layout where I now have two desks and little reading nook. It's very important to me to have space where I can call create and doors can be shut and everyone gets the idea to leave mom alone! lol
I love to see where and how artists work. I thought it might be fun if others shared pics of their workspaces here too, I know I'd enjoy seeing them!
Note: My studio is never this clean... This is just the calm before the storm!

RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio FEBRUARY 🙃2021
Revisiting an old sketch. First time pre-deciding my color palette in hopes it will make the process go more smoothly. How do y'all decide what colors to use? I saw an image and liked the colors so I'm going to try and emulate them in this painting.

Yetina the Ballerina
Meet Yetina the Ballerina! Looking for some feedback...first thoughts, problem areas, etc. I painted it originally in watercolor then have been working on it in Affinity (FYI I know almost nothing about digital art so bear with me...it took me an hour just to find the brushes! lol) I might actually have enough time to finish this one though. Loving that this prompt was for a spot illustration...those full-page spreads are A LOT lol.
Can't wait to see everyone's yetis this month!

RE: Yetina the Ballerina
So I couldn't get my original yeti any more saturated without just totally destroying the image (I have very limited experience with digital) so I started over. now trying to decide which one to submit.
Also FYI I found it very interesting when I showed my 3 kids (ages 4-11) the slideshow of all the yeti house entries, their favorites were not ones I would choose (although they were all great but hey you can only pick 16....) Actually most they chose I don't think made it to the top 16. I've done this before (showing them all the entries) and it's always the same way! It would be interesting to let kids judge in the arena and see what happens! They are the ultimate judges of children's illustrations right? haha. BTW they LOVE looking at all the entries and they spend 5 minutes on each one talking together about the things they love, don't understand, or would just attempt differently. I was cracking up because they reminded me of mini @Will-Terry @Jake-Parker and @Lee-White HAHA
Anyways that was food for thought. Here's my second try lol.

Slowvember WIP
Hi, I'm Kara, I'm new here to SVS! Thought I'd share my first draft for slowvember. I did @Lee-White 's questionnaire from his youtube video...drew a bunch of thumbnails in relation to a story I wrote and came up with this. I'm trying to show a filthy polluted city with a beautiful parcel of land in the center that really is set apart from the city by a wall. I would love to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve this piece on my next go around painting it.
Also I am very much enjoying seeing everyones work here on the forum. I've tried joining facebook groups to share work and give/receive critiques but that was just an all around total failure
Glad I found SVS!
P.S. Sorry if the image is blurry, its a photo and I saved it small just in case it wouldn't upload here.

RE: NOVEMBER CONTEST: SLOWVEMBER
My first attempt at an SVS contest! I went back to a previous piece I spent a month on in October and reworked it a bit to meet this deadline. I may continue with my initial project from November at a later time but right now i'm trying to finish some full color spreads from this story I wrote so I can send out my dummy book! Everyone's work looks great! I loved seeing everyones progress. Wish I had photos to share of my thumbnails and character design from this spread but they are all packed away. I think the most beneficial part of #slowvember for me was @Lee-White Questionnaire, it asked some really thought provoking questions that really helped me understand how I want to move forward as an artist.

WIP January
Here is my idea for the challenge:
"The tracts in the snow were unlike anything Will had seen before."Questions:
- Is it clear that the yeti is "Will"
- Does having half of the boys face off the page further suggest he is hiding or should I include his whole face?
- Overall thoughts for making this a better composition?
Also, I anyone else freaking out about having to paint snow?? I know I am!
Any tips for that would be greatly appreciated!

Painting progress
I'm currently working on this painting and am going to just share my progress on here while I keep plugging away at it. It's a scene from a story I wrote called Sylvia. It's an image of joy and surprise for her. Trying to limit my color palette but it's hard! Using watercolor and qouache. Any critiques, suggestions, etc are welcome.
