Hello from Toronto, Canada
-
Hello everyone,
I’m 45 and have been drawing cartoons and newspaper style comics since I was a kid. I always wanted to be a cartoonist but chose to go down the path of web design instead. That path eventually led to digital marketing on the corporate side with a podcast side hustle that eventually ended up with me self-publishing and self-printing a book (with a text and comics mix) which I promote by... drawing and posting more comics!
So I’ve come full circle I would love to make a living out of my comics which is why I’m so grateful to have discovered the brilliant this-needs-a-Nobel-and-Caldecott-award Three Point Perspective podcast this spring and enjoyed every episode with many takeaways. I can already see an improvement in my compositions.
I’m in between jobs now and it’s hard not to want to ditch the job search for drawing all day, every day. Until that day arrives, I’d love to connect with other illustrators. Hello!
My drawing skills are rusty as I need to get back into practice so I’m hoping by being active in the SVS Forums, I can be motivated to draw, draw, draw while I tend to my side hustle and job search. Too much sitting down.
In any case, here’s a sample of my style. It’s kinda sorta the “cartoon modern” look. I tend to work in black and white since I’ve never built up the skill to work on in colour.
Pleased to meet you all!

@danielerossi welcome to the forums! Sorta like you I started college off going for animation and then switched to web design/development cause at the time it was a hot field to get into and jobs were plenty.
-
Hi Daniel, and welcome! I'm a little older, too, (38) trying to get into illustration. These forums are a good place to be for help and feedback.
-
Welcome
-
@danielerossi I'm in pretty much in the same boat as you (without the self published book part). Welcome!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Welcome. I’m a fellow GTAer living in Brooklin -just east of Toronto. We are also a similar age. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work.
I used to make a 3 panel strip in my free time and share online and in our local paper and I’ve been thinking about getting started again. Nice to meet like minded people. -

hi, I love your little tiger! I joined here this year and am hoping to start working professionally in illustration at some point, I am switching over from traditional media/pet portrait commissions etc and I'm in Newfoundland
-
@danielerossi Hi Daniel, welcome, love the tiger it’s a little bit like Calvin and Hobbes meets James Thurber cartoons, maybe.... but not quite....definitely your own style anyway.
Sorry I spelt your name wrong I just realised it’s Daniele and I agree stuttering is cool. -
@Mr-Rob Thanks fort he welcome, neighbourino! I’d love to draw for my local paper. I should look into that.
-
@Marsha-Kay-Ottum-Owen 62 is the new 26! That means 45 must be the new 54
-
@Coley Thanks! Newfoundland is one of my bucket list destinations. Had the chance to go this November but flights are just too expensive. Had a previous trip to Iceland and Newfoundland looks beautiful even from the air! The mountains were cutting through the clouds!

@peteolczyk No problem. My name caused so much confusion all my life and continues to do so. It’s an Italian name for boys.
You’re probably the third or fourth person to tell me that my tiger character (named Ti-Ger) reminds people of Hobbes it wasn’t my intention when I designed him but originally he was orange in colour. Then I decided maybe I should keep him black and white to avoid confusion. Though there is a definite difference between my drawing abilities and Bill Watterson’s

@peteolczyk Thumbs up on agreeing stuttering is cool Do you stutter as well?
