@Julia I went over the pencil one again using a brown color pencil instead of a 4B pencil and like it better. I think I will try the watercolor pencils too. So many choices!

I didn't post anything earlier this month (I usually try to get something up on the 2nd day) as I didn't really have anything to contribute. But tonight I just let go and blissfully doodled. I used a reference pic off Pixabay, and sorta just meandered my stylus across the surface of my iPad until I thought it was done. I probably followed the reference image too closely, as it was sorta just copying, but I think sometimes there's a value to using drawing to just let go... It was very zen, actually. No pressure, no plan, no precision, no procedures, no purpose--just playing. I love to draw while listening to some of my favorite drawing music or a movie I've seen a million times so it isn't distracting and play it in the background. I can't listen to tutorials or books or things that require too much attention. This was relaxing for me tonight. Thought I'd share.

For the SCBWI Draw This! Challenge - prompt is “Secret Admirer”

I’m not sure about this one yet. I think I’m 90% done but I don’t quite know what that last 10% is. I’ll come back to it later coz my brain isn’t thinking clearly. I like it coz it’s pretty and flowery. But I’m pretty sure I can come up with a better concept. But the submission deadline is in 2 days so I’m not sure if I’ll have time.

@Braden-Hallett I’ve always loved your work but I really like what you’ve been doing recently without line. I know a lot of it you’ve been doing just to experiment with light but I find it a very appealing style.

@burvantill I haven't joined scbwi. Worth it? My image with the characters in the snow would fit the secret admirer prompt LoL! A little pricey to join so just seeing what peeps thinking of it's value

First time artist grade anything. Daniel Smith watercolours - such vibrant colours! Wow wow! A bit more practise needed. But I love the colours made from primary colours.

@Coley It totally would.
As for SCBWI. That is a good question. I think that if I hadn't started writing a story I probably would've let my membership lapse this year. Last year was the first year I had joined, and as an illustrator I didn't feel like there was a lot of support, especially in my region. I went to my regions spring conference last year and I'd say about 90% of the programs were geared towards writers. There was one workshop out of sixteen that was specifically for illustrators alone. Since I'm writing now, and am a total rookie at it, I think that I will get a lot more out of the conference and the meet & greets this year. I went to several meet and greets last year thinking to meet other illustrators and there were only writers. Fortunately I met a great art friend through svsforum that lives near enough that we can have a monthly art day.
I'm going to this years spring conference and possibly the summer convention in LA, and if I feel the same way as last year then I will probably not renew next year. We'll see.

The SCBWI TheBook is awesome, but not the only source of contacts.

@burvantill thanks for the thought ! I’m pretty isolated where I live. I’m betting it’s several flights to get to the nearest conference anyhow! I might email the “ local’ chapter and ask. Only half of Canada to travel lol. I really need online connections as I’m just too far from the action!
are there awards for the draw this challenge or is it just basically a gallery?
