@jeremy-ross Thank you! That helps! I will keep at it. During 3PP they were talking about master studies and how they would required to have perfect copies in art school. I think that has just made me kind of frozen. I may just have to to write a note to myself that it doesn't have to be perfect to be helpful.

It is a great idea to make that a part of everyday life and a routine to do with your kids. I want to find a way to fit that in with my kiddos. I might be stuck drawing elsa and anna constantly though. 🙂

Not sure if you're entering this piece for the competition, but I'll crtique it as though you were.

Because the artwork would be printed in small deminsions, one only really sees charizard's head, wing shape and moon. It's too dark. Instead of black, perhaps use darker, blue-ish hues for the background elements. It'll help make the orange pop out. The contest asks to see pokemon living its daily life routine. Because the charizard is asleep, the narrative becomes more about the resourceful basic pokemon. This is a problem if the aim is to create an artwork for a charizard card. If charizard were awake, it's more about it being generous towards others. Maybe the wing can be lifted up to act as a canopy? While the contest rules didn't ban adding additional figures in the competition, it wasn't supportive of the idea. However, the winning piece from the last competition had both a pokemon and trainer in a piece. Would you be interested in swapping out the wild pokemon for a trainer? I would reexamine the (gol)bats + moon in the background. The moon takes one eyes away from the scene.

The past month I have been getting into setting aside an hour to sketch, like when I did the Little Tiger draw every day project and I have been drawing different things, sometimes bears or unicorns or my dogs, just drawing. Now, I have lots of pages of drawings that could possibly be a picture. I like to create word lists that you create by word association then you can stretch you imagination and come up with new ideas for illustrations. This picture is what I came up with after I drew some unicorns.

Yeah, eff those pretty looking sketchbooks. I usually keep one at a time and get a new one once i filled it with a dumpsterfire of failed ideas and uninteligible writing (cuz even my caligraphy is ugly af). I also try to use most of the page so i have tons of bad drawings stacking on top of each other, intertwined with ideas for a stories that i eventually end up forgeting. I used to care a little about my sketchbooks when i was younger, but i always became frustrated or embarased when one of my drawings was a failure, so i was even scared to use them to try new ideas or techniques.
I think that it was in a podcast called "lets fight a boss" where i heard one of the host say that she always intentionally ruins the first pages of her sketchbooks so she can stop caring about it looking pretty and just concentrate on what really is important.
I tried that advice and never looked back, its nice to scribble around, not really caring about having a good result and just think all over the page.

QUESTION! Do you happen to have a more in-depth portfolio on character design?

I haven't used inkscape, but I'm willing to try it.
I'll try to keep the shadows in mind for the lighting, but I will say that I was deliberately focusing on the highlights for this one because I hadn't done much of that before. That's no excuse for bad shading, but I felt it was worth pointing out.
I've look up Jaegers for reference, but I suppose that getting an actual model where I can play with the angles and lighting would be very beneficial.
I'm deeply grateful that you took the time to make that guide. Once again thank you.

I will certainly go back into the fundamentals. I have a couple art books that friends gave me a while back, and I never really studied because they looked boring, but I think I will start by going through them and doing all the exercises that I can find.

I did use the straight line tool for everything that I could in order to work around my inexperience with a tablet, but I will try to avoid that when I can.
