SCBWI Portfolio Showcase?
-
Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone here is registering themselves for the SCBWI Summer Spectacular 2020 Portfolio Showcase (NOT the portfolio review, the showcase)
I am not clear as to where I am supposed to upload my portfolio. These are the instructions given:
"Please upload your portfolio images to your Member Profile on the SCBWI website."What is the Member Profile? Is it the same as the Illustrator Gallery?
If yes, should I remove all my other artworks and only upload the portfolio pieces?
If it's something else, what is it?
Thanks!

@Neha-Rawat I have the same question/confusion about the showcase. I sent them an email about it and no response yet but this reminds me to follow up today, I'll let you know if I learn anything!

Good question! I think it might be the same thing but I want it clarified now too. I logged in, clicked on my home, then added illustrations in there which also show up in the illustrator gallery. I hope that's correct.

This was on the email. A month or so ago...
And what I see when I hit the my home button on upper right once I, logged in. I think this is what we’re supposed to do but I do want it clarified because it would be rotten to spend 100 usd and not have it be seen!
I blurred out address etc. That’s my home, and the place to upload illustrations bottom right. If you read first line of my bio don’t judge me lol

@Neha-Rawat It's really unclear, I agree. The email states it's going to be a separate entity, but when I registered it said to upload to your normal gallery. Not super clear.

@Neha-Rawat @Coley @Laurel-Aylesworth @Lucky-Platt
Everything in your Illustrator Gallery becomes your Portfolio for the Portfolio Showcase if you paid for that option in the Summer Spectacular.
The reason they're making a big deal of the two being distinctly different entities is because too many people said, "Why pay so much if they're just going to go look at the pre-existing Illustrator Galleries on the Member Profiles?"
They are lifting your Gallery images and placing them into a different interface for viewing so they can say the viewers aren't just going to a person's Gallery on the website.
Because the SCBWI Illustrator Galleries include everyone who is a member, and not just those who paid for the Portfolio Showcase, they're creating a new interface that will put all the Showcase participants' Galleries into one place (in alphabetical order) so the viewers won't simply be looking at a website that's already there that no one paid $100 to participate in...
In my opinion it's really lame. And I fell for it. It's just a shell or framing mechanism they're using to curate who paid and who didn't. And they're using your pre-existing member Illustration Gallery to draw the images from.
So make sure your Illustration Gallery only has the images you want to include in your Portfolio Showcase.

@Coreyartus thanks. I’m wondering how many people are doing it. That could be a lot of portfolios to sort through I think. We should take bets on how many!
For me it is very expensive and time consuming to travel so I thought it might be worth it. With likely hundreds of portfolios to sift through, It might not really be worth it. Anyhow, fingers crossed someone sees it and likes it at least.
Thanks for the info -
I ended up doing it as well. Haven't uploaded my images yet but I just hope that it'll at least be another way to get my art in front of some art directors and agents. Good luck to everyone else who's participating!

@Coreyartus Thanks for the clarification! I think SCBWI can be a great resource but I've always found their communication and website navigation not up to par.
@Coley @Melanie-Ortins Yeah, same reason for me too. Just trying to get my art in front of the right people. I assume the number is going to be huge since the virtual conference makes it much more affordable for a lot of people.
I'm really not expecting any results, just doing my part of putting in my effort. Sort of like "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"
Good luck to everyone participating!

I'm adding my thanks and two cents--Thank you to @Coley for digging up that explanation---and @Coreyartus I totally agree that it "might" be a marketing scam...however, it DID give me incentive to work on my portfolio through the summer...so I paid to be incentivized...and with rest of you...I'm also REALLY hoping for a chance to be in front of agents and directors during the virtual conference.
Speaking of the virtual conference, has anyone found the online content presented to members throughout the summer valuable--which was the most useful?

@Laurasketches I'm almost a month behind now. I really liked the Cecelia (?) Yung and ooh the guy who worked on the muppets one LoL. Can't believe I'm blanking because I watched it three times at least. It's gone now tho. I'm actually rewatching the Vashti Harrison one now, I think that's a good one for illustrators! I also just clued into regional webinars and looked at the schedule. There's one in two days (21 July), that is about how to receive critiques. Considering that one. Only$15. Of course convert that to Canadian and it's 500 bucks Ha ha ha kidding. I signed up for the portfolio consult too so it might be good to do that webinar.
I'll have to get on the ball watching the other free series before they disappear.
