A proper hello...

Hi!
I've already participated in a couple of monthly contests, but haven't taken the time say hello. I'm a former art director and current editorial illustrator in Santa Fe, NM. I've been a full time freelance illustrator for 10 years now and it's been a wonderful ride so far.
I've always had a strong interest in picture books, but I'm not yet able to realize a new style. My formal education was in design. All my illustration was self-taught and I have a lot to learn about this stuff. I'm learning so much through the SVS classes and it's so great to see everyone improving together on these forums.
Anyway, if anyone has questions about the editorial world, I've been neck deep in it for a couple decades. As for picture books, I'm starting over as a novice and looking to get better.

Nice to meet you! I had a look at your website and there's some very entertaining stuff on there!
The combination of technical drawings with wit is very effective.I agree that there's more to switching artistic specialties than at first meets the eye. I have a background in oil portraiture and could always paint realistic people well enough to get clients to pay me a decent amount for it (back when I lived in a place where people did portraits), but putting those skills into a dynamic story environment, in a fraction of the time, and in a memorable and consistent style, is a lot more difficult than it looks! I have been working at the transition now for more time than I'd like to admit. But I remember your nightfall piece and I liked your take on it. I think you'll get it pretty fast!

@LauraA Thanks for the kind words about my site. Good to know I'm not crazy in struggling to cross-over into something completely different. There are a lot of skills to build up and then coordinate. But it's all really interesting. Love the characters on your instagram feed. So much life in them.

@SpencerT Sure, my major was officially called "Communication Design." It focused on graphic design studio work that was prevalent in the Dallas area at the time. Branding, annual reports, that sort of thing. I went into web design and then magazine work pretty quickly after graduating. I was a magazine designer and art director for about 12 years.

Thank you, I just recently made it. It's a start. Just started a blog too because I love writing as much as I do making art. I continue to work on improving basic skills and a style (never ending process).
