Hi from San Diego!

My name is Charlie Lyons-Pardue. I’ve been working in creative fields for a couple of decades but in jack-of-all trades artistic roles. I’d like to shift gears and focus in on one area - illustration - with the goal of working as an independent artist.

The dream would be to work on projects like what John Hendrix and Nate Powell have been putting out. Illustrating something like “Faithful Spy” or “March” would be the ultimate goal for me.

Right now I’m working on regaining some dormant skills and going back to the basics as I spend the next year building up a portfolio worthy of submitting to a good MFA program.

Hey, Charlie! Welcome! I'm in San Diego as well! It's nice to hear of someone else in the area! I, too, am spending time developing my basics, and I've found the courses over on the "Curriculum Side" of SVSLearn to be incredibly helpful. The content isn't just about children's books, and even when it is the content is still applicable to a wide variety of different illustration fields.

San Diego also has a healthy SCBWI chapter, and I've met a lot of great people there, too.

Your work is delightful and enchanting! Can't wait to see more!

@Coreyartus thanks for the welcome Corey, I work at just down the road from you. I’m at PLNU doing artsy stuff for chapel (stage design, graphic design, filmmaking, etc). I started bingeing on 3 Point Perspectives back in October (I’m caught up now) and started the curriculum here at SVS last month. I’m already learning a ton and looking forward to the artist community here in the forums. I’m looking for a thoughtful group to learn and grow with. Family & friends are great but they don’t say much in the way of helpful critique (which is fine - we all need a cheerleading section).

@aska I can't complain. San Diego is pretty idyllic! I do miss autumn, but apart from that it's pretty near perfect.
