I wanted an excuse to play around with textures and a less polished looking drawing style.
That was obviously a really good idea. This turned out really REALLY awesome!

@anya-macleod wow! I just love the colors you picked for this! It make the picture seem dreamy and cold yet warm and cozy. Love it!
@avfarrar thankyou that means a lot because I always struggle with picking colours!
@Braden-Hallett cheers Braden, you’ve got a great portfolio of work from this slowvember.
@peteolczyk your piece is wonderful. I love the action and tje gesture in the character
@peteolczyk wowowow~ love the movement and the mood in this! Really awesome work!
This is the first time I've entered the SVS contest. Here's to new goals! I've had this image in mind for a while. Being from Oklahoma, we studied the bison quite a bit. It's our state mammal. When I was in grade school, the species was endangered, and now we are eating them again. I think that's a triumph, right? (Incidentally, the bird is a scissor-tailed flycatcher and is the Oklahoma state bird. Ironically, it is becoming endangered.) Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!! image url)
@Tom-Shannon you have taken the ghost concept into a very sensitive perspective. I like that it has made me think.
Welcome to the contest!
@karammitchell not certain if what I am going to say was intentional for you but I like how the mountain shape has been repeated through the hump of your bison (don't you just want to hug him, lols) and even the top of your scissor-tailed flycatcher's head - it helps bring unity to your image (I think that at least). Also seen in the clouds I forgot to mention.
@Heather-Boyd Thank you! I'm glad those kinds of decisions are coming through!
Hi! I’m new here at this forum and I would like to join the contest this month. I’m not quite sure how to. Do I post an illustration directly here in this thread?
@Jenny-Lindqvist yes. Just make sure it's less than 500kb. I didn't know that for a long time.
@chrisaakins ah, okay! Thank you
Hey everyone! I'm going on a long Thanksgiving vacation through the end of the month so I have to stop working on this and just submit it!
Huge shoutout to everyone who gave me a critique when I was stuck. I printed out all of your comments and considered them one by one. Can't tell you how much you helped!
PS: I can't figure out this file size biz. Is this too large?
Happy Thanksgiving!
@SFischer OH, my Gracious! This is so dynamic and exciting! And that color!!
@SFischer Fabulous colour, texture, lighting, composition, character, expressions and mood! You should be mighty pleased with yourself -more like this please.
@SFischer Have a great vacation, you really made this piece pop!
Hi everyone! So this is my very first time submitting to a svs challenge. I'm pretty new and only in the past month or so started getting into children's book illustration, even signed up for a local (in person!!) workshop on children's book illustration starting in Jan so I'm excited about that. I'm still working on finding my style, I work traditionally and I love to draw in mostly pencil/ink/watercolour but I decided to bust out the acrylics on this one with a little digital fine-tuning at the end. I'm not super happy with how I couldn't get the details that I wanted with the brush.
So is my Canadianness showing?? My original idea was a girl with braids playing hockey but decided it would be more fun with friends...this is very intimidating I might add thanks for looking!
@SFischer I love the colours and the silhouette of the ape!
