I ended up reposting because I can’t stop fiddling with it but I just need to stop now haha! I’ve been focusing in improving my fundamentals and was really focusing on values in this one, but it was a big struggle and took forever because I couldn’t stop fussing with it

New member intro and portfolio piece critique
Hi everyone!
I’m new here, my name is Anya, I’m from Adelaide,
(any other aussies on here?) I’m working on my portfolio to start submitting to agents next year, I’m recently trying to transition into children’s book illustration, for most of my life I’ve been more of a realistic painter, so it’s a constant battle not to slip back into that style, as I want to aim for more stylised. I don’t personally know any illustrators or even pro artists so I’m really looking for constructive critique and would absolutely love to find a mentor that is a pro children’s book illustrator!
Anyways, here is a piece I’ve just finished that I’m not sure about, any critique welcome!
Cheers,
Anya -
RE: Help with a river
@tazzyartist I think it looks still because the ripple lines are going horizontal and the reflections of the trees are very formed, I think if you changed the lines in the water to go with the flow and broke up the reflections it would look more flowing

Physical portfolio
Hi guys,
I'm super excited to be attending my first illustrator conference and I have the chance to display my portfolio but no idea how to actually make one, what kind of paper do I print on? Do I just use any type of folder or is there something specific people use?Cheers,

Struggling with perspective on reindeer head
Hi all,
I'm really struggling with the perspective on his head, he's eye position and I think nose, I just can't get it to not look weird and I've looked and played with it too much now, any suggestions? I loosely tried to use the head position from this photo

RE: Looking for feedback about working with a self publisher.
@Jennyann I've illustrated 3 books for self publishers, I was paid a lump sum based on an amount per illustration that we agreed on and that I was happy with, no royalties. I was paid in 3 stages, 1/3 upon signing contract, 1/3 upon completion of sketches and the rest upon completion.

Colour harmony help-working digitally
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any tips or resources for help with colour when working digitally? Specifically selecting a colour palette that sings together and also neutralized colours that are not flat?
I've never had a problem with this when working traditionally I guess due to being limited in colour choices to start with and then mixing all my colours, this has been drilled into me since I started painting as a child. I do try to follow the same ideas when working digitally, repeating the colours and limiting palettes but I find the finished piece just doesn't look as harmonious as I would like, particularly in pieces that require more neatralized colours like indoor scenes, or that need a lot of variation in colour like clothing on a lot of people, even though I never use one off colours except for focal points.
I just finished the magic of colour course and will be doing the light and shadow and colour and light courses.Cheers,
Anya

RE: Perspective- pleeease help!
@Lee-White thankyou so much for the tips, it's helpful to know that mixing different systems in one illustration can work as that is something I was struggling with understanding, I guess like you said it's just a matter of grinding it out until I can find the fine line between it looking artistically wonky and looking like I tried to do linear perspective and got it wrong
@davidhohn I definitely agree that understanding the rules will help me be more comfortable in breaking them, your class has been very helpful, I don't know what it is about perspective but I've just always struggled with grasping the technical concepts, but I think it's finally starting to sink in -

RE: Perspective- pleeease help!
@davidhohn thankyou so much that really simplifies the process, I always seem to get overwhelmed by it and not know where to begin, I'm about halfway through your class and it's really great! I wonder if you can help me with one other thing, I'm really drawn to the kind of illustrations that have somewhat wonky playfully perspective where one side appears flattened, similar to a lot of Lee White's work and Beatrice Alemanga etc, and I really want to introduce some of that into my work but I don't know how(aside from obviously learning the rules first before breaking them
) but was wondering if you have any tips for that?

RE: Perspective- pleeease help!
@Braden-Hallett ehhh perspective is the bane of my existence lol! When you say agree with each other do you mean match up with the two sides of the bookshelf? I agree the girl and cat dont look grounded, I'm not sure if it's because I haven't added shadows yet or if the perspective on them is also off

RE: Perspective- pleeease help!
@davidhohn thankyou so much that is very helpful, I hadn't thought of doing a layout plan like that, I think I was more going for the objects being parallel to the walls but for some reason they ended up angled but now I'm confused as to how it should be so back to the drawing board for me haha, I'll definitely do the class you mentioned too thankyou

RE: Perspective- pleeease help!
I used the grid that @Lee-Holland showed me and I think the bookshelves and floor look much better, but I’m still a bit confused with the foreground items, chair and table with books, do I need to match it to the perspective of the background? Does it look weird how it is? I can’t even tell anymore lol

@Lee-Holland thankyou so much this is super helpful! I think I was really struggling to determine where to place my horizon line and this really helps!!
