Pumped to be here!

  • Hey everyone, hope you're all enjoying your day! Super excited about joining to community.

My name is Josh Masse, coming from Kingston, Ontario, Canada and I started listening to the podcast at the beginning of the year. It's one of my favourites. The value you guys are providing to people is incredible.

So full transparency, I'm a 'late bloomer'. Didn't get into the creative industry until after college. I spent my whole life working in the trades and after a long time of not being happy and not knowing what I wanted to do with my life, I finally came to the realization that there was this whole creative world out there with actual paying jobs!

Fast forward a little bit, I spent 5 years working in a print shop as a designer and finding every design and art-related resource that I could to study from and educate myself with. By this point in my life I had a mortgage to pay, a wife and 2 kids to feed, so going back to school wasn't really an option for me.

I am now working as an independent graphic designer/illustrator, but more so on the design side at the moment. I started my business about a year and a half ago under the name Cloud27 and originally focused on brand identity. After iterating my processes over and over again, I am coming to realize that my fire is fueled by the actual creation of the art, telling impactful stories and creating meaningful connections.

So, I'm now in the process of exploring the option of a full-time career in illustration. The podcast has helped me so much already, but I'm excited to connect and grow with the community and get into some of the SVS classes.

Instagram is @cloud27design if anyone wants to check it out.

@Josh-Masse Welcome Josh! It seems like there's been an influx of new people from Ontario lately 🙂 I'm from Ottawa myself!
There seems to be this mindset in the art world that the best artists practically had a brush in hand when they were still in diapers. That's simply not the case and there's really nothing wrong with being a late bloomer! Some of the most famous classic painters in history started in their 30's, 40's, and a lot of them didn't get into their stride until their 50's or 60's. One of the most successful artists I know personally never drew anything before he was 26, went through a bad break up and decided to buy a sketchbook and doodle to distract himself. He discovered a talent for it and started drawing so much that less than 2 years later, he had surpassed most artists his age who had been drawing since childhood. Besides, you'll find most people here in the forums are post-college age adults, and many are 40+ and transitioning into a second career in illustration. I think you'll fit right in! 🙂

  • Welcome! This is a great community. I think we are all excited to see your work and hear your opinions.
