Hey guys! πŸ–

Lately I've been working on an artpiece that was supossed to take me away from my comfort zone and teach me some new things.
I think I am finished, although because of the fact that I basically changed my entire process for this one and made something I never did before, I am not sure πŸ˜’

Here's the illustration

Lemme give you a bit of context first.
I always tend to create those linebased illustrations, that are colorful, saturated, with a lot of elements that are kinda flat and graphic mixed with dimensional and rendered shapes.

This piece was all about new experiences, so I tried to paint it like a real painter, with limited color pallete ( almost all colors in here were the result of mixing one shade of blue, yellow, white and black ) to step away from my tendencies to create oversaturated pieces that have colors from the entire color wheel. I aimed for the color harmony

On top of that, I wanted NO lines in here, so I couldn't use them to cheat my way around some rendering issues. I also tried to be very loose and avoid any unnecessary details, because I've always loved when someone did that, yet never had the balls to try it for myself....I usually overrender a lot of the elements on my piece so using only a few essential brushstrokes was another limitation I've put on myself πŸ˜”

As for the mood of the piece, I call it the Calm Fisherman because that is the feeling I want it to awoke. A lone man, in the middle of an oper water in a sunny day, just sitting there and staying, like a fisherman should, absolutely calm. That's why he and his boat are the only elements in the picture, that's why the water's surface is calm, without heavy waves.

To sum up:
My main focus was to keep it loose, painterly and not detailed, I wanted to achieve color harmony through limited color pallete and I wanted this piece to be about finding calmness and peace through loneliness ( which is, essentialy, how I feel when I lock myself up in my room and stay completely focused on a piece of art )

Soo... How do you think I did and how would you push those concepts further?

  • Did I sell the water as a texture? I've studied calm water surfaces and reflections but I've been staring at it for so long I can't tell if it looks right or not.
  • Do you feel what I wanted to convey with this? Does the piece appear calm?
  • Did I overdo the looseness thing? I was REALLY boling it down only to the most important details and I am afraid it may not read well.
  • Do you notice anything wrong about the lighting? It was quite terryfing to NOT use lines to describe forms.

and finally, my biggest question...

  • Does it look, despite the looseness, like an finished artpiece? Do you look at it and think "Oh, this guy meant to kept it quick and loose" or are you more like "That's an unfinished painting, someone must be halfway through the process here"

Be bold, be honest. I really want to push myself to the limit with this one so any form of feedback would mean the world to me! πŸ˜„
