Hey guys, we are all set to run the Illustration 1 class. It starts on april 11 and will last 9 weeks. Limit this time is 20 students.

Comment: We are currently halfway through this course and I am blown away but what I have learned so far. The techniques are seemingly simple to follow but the results and the ability to generate more concept ideas and options to work from have been really eye opening. Along with applying what I am learning to the course assignments I am already starting to apply them in my day to day work. It is making me more productive, I am getting more work done and the end results are going to be so much better at conveying the emotion and my point of view in each illustration. Both Lee and David are masters in their craft but are also excellent instructors as well. The enthusiasm they both have for this material and the assignments all of us submit is so motivating and inspiring. I simply can not recommend this course enough. If you are considering it, I say go for it - you will not be disappointed!

@Lee-White Hi Lee, I am considering enrollment in this class and I have a few questions:

1. The class description says it is an interactive class and it also says the lessons are pre recorded. Does that mean the feedback session is interactive?
2. Does it talk about the execution techniques ?
3. Is there any traditional demo?

It will be very helpful for SVS classes that are of this nature to have a preview video or a description going over the syllabus / topics/ week breakdown that are discussed/done in this class.

Hi Nazuba,

Here's a brief answer to your questions:

1. It's a really interesting format that we have for the class. The lectures and demos are recorded so you can view them at any time. Then, you upload your work and we will record a crit of that each week. During the week, we have a live discussion board where there have been fantastic conversations going on as well as a place to answer any questions or concerns students have during the week. This model feels so much more connected than traditional classes because you can reach us at any point in the wek

2. We do talk about lots of techniques (both art related and also idea generation, etc). Most of the projects are taken to a toned sketch finish because the focus is really setting up a good illustration (having really good content and meaning). The last project we take to a full finish.

3. We do go over traditional as well as digital techniques. We also go over other things like developing style and voice, color studies, business practices, etc.

It's been a very robust class and our students are getting great work out of it. This class will lead into Illustration 2 where we will focus on taking things to a finish and really nailing the final artwork. Note: this class does deal directly with illustration (not generic "idea" generating techniques to be more creative in life). I want to point this out because the illustrations do require drawing. Basic ability in drawing figures, etc. will make the class much more enjoyable for you.

@Lee-White Thanks for the clarification Lee, is there an approximate schedule of when the Illustration 2 will come out? I am planning my budget so it might be that I will have to choose one based on the time the second class comes out.

@Nazuba we are planning the classes to exist sequentially, so you will probably need to take Illustration 1 first. There are so many ideas and processes that we go through for image development that taking Illustration 2 first would leave you a bit confused and/or under prepared.

I am torn on this...I'm sure Illustration 1 is as useful as Rich and Lynn say it is, and I'd really like to nail my finish as described in Illustration 2.....but I was holding out for the watercolour class (hopefully) coming later. And I have big deadlines/busy month coming up. So I'll probably have to skip this one, but I definitely want to sign up for one or two of these classes this year.

@Dulcie and all - there is a real positive energy that David and Lee provide not only in the lessons that are taught each week, but also to the critiques they provide on each of the assignments. You can see/feel their excitement for the work that everyone is submitting and that just encourages all of us to push harder to bring more clever and creative ideas to our illustrations.

You know when you can tell that someone really loves what they are doing, well that is exactly the vibe you get from both David and Lee about teaching this course, which just makes it such a pleasure to be a part of. I could not be happier about my decision to take this course and I am really looking forward to Illustration 2!

@Rich-Green I got that positive vibe from you and Lynn also - energetic, enthused, you're not just saying it - you really do think it's a great course! I would really like to be a part of that...I have budget for one, hopefully two of these classes this year and I really want to make it count...I don't want to sign up if I can't give it 100% ...I'd be better off letting somebody else have the place..but I'm definitely watching this space to see what's coming (and still tempted).

Oooh, you guys are going to have so much fun! This class has been amazing! It has really helped me think through the process and come up with new and original ideas, I'm so sad it's almost over. Any subscription courses that might be beneficial to review?
What about helpful art supplies?

I feel like a kid who wants to lay out my backpack and clothes before my first big day of kindergarten.
