Lucy's Magic toolbox - April 3rd Thursday
-
I made some time today to start working on some thumbnails for my 3rd Thursday. I have my concept in place so I'm working more on placement of my character, pacing of the scene and thoughts on color. It may be a little vague but I'll have some more tonight of the character. I'm going for a two page spread with a less mechanical and more organic approach to the problem where Lucy is going to fix a hole in a large tree.
Any comments and critiques are welcome.

Worked on some character tonight. I was "completely" sure of my direction until I started exploring some face shapes and poses. More to come as I finalize my thumbs.
-
Great start! I love process pics, even though i'm terrible at sharing them hehe. The faces are wonderful, just need more confidence
-
Great idea! I had such a hard time trying to think about an idea for this one.
-
Thanks guys! I wanted to push myself and think past the apparent context. I have a ways to go so we'll see how well it relates. :^D=
@lynn-larson I am so bad at sharing them too which is why I'm trying to get better at it. I don't like posting things that look bleh but I see a lot of people on Twitter that share their process and get some good following/feedback. I'm slowly learning it doesn't hurt to put yourself out there.

Workin' on some character designs today. Here are a few Lucy sketches I refined and the rough thumbnails for my two page spread.

@BradAYoo How true....posting anything on social media makes me feel vulnerable and self-conscious. But I am trying and learning! Your Lucyยดs look great, though the one with the tuft of hair on top feels a little boyish - but maybe that is the character you want! My favorite is the third one - it also looks a bit Jake-Parker-ish ;-). Looking forward to the piece!
-
I love where your character designs are headed. I can't wait to see this piece progress further.
-
These are very cool! I like #3 and #6. I think it will come down to how you want to treat the background. If you go super cartoon style with larger shapes, #3 would fit nicely. The additional level of detail of #6 would probably require a similar level of detail in leaves/bark/grass/etc.
I definitely feel that Lucy is confident in all 6 concepts.

Oops, meant to post this last night. Here is some progress: I went with a different layout/size on my pages for various reasons. I also finished the line work on the 1st pg and started on pg 2. I should be done and starting on color tomorrow.
-
That's some really nice work love that tree. And your character designs are wonderful! Looking forward to seeing the finish.

Thank you @evilrobot :^)=
Here is my final submission for tomorrow's 3rdThursday. I did some re-thinking on the two page spread and started to wonder if I even needed the extra content for the story to read... nope. I cut out the hand with dust and the growing tree and I feel that the story reads a lot better now. Leaves some of the wonder and thinking for the viewer. See you all tomorrow night!
And always, comments and critiques are very much appreciated.

I love it! Your tree is so wonderfully rendered and Lucy definitely radiates confidence! great job

@Lynn-Larson Thank Lynn. That tree was a lot of fun! I don't have my technique down yet so I wasn't too confident when I started rendering it. But with some play and trying different brushes it came out well.
Last submission here, I promise... I think, hehheh. I submitted my illustration last night and became restless thinking of all the details that would help push the image. I added some falling leaves to the tree, some sparkles and an abstract tool to the toolbox. I am much happier with the results now.
Thank you all for the kind words and comments! Happy 3rd Thursday.
