As for interview guests, I propose the following be considered for 2022:

• LeUyen Pham (she has illustrated and written over 120 books and Caldecott honor for Bear Came Along). Recently, she’s creating Picturebooks entirely in Procreate.

• Luke Flowers (how has he found so much success without an agent?!) “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” held NY Times Best Seller for 32 weeks in 2019!)

• Dan Santat (Caldecott medalist for “The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend”, created over 60 books, 14 of which were published in 2014 alone!)

• Brigette Barrager (Artist, designer, writer and illustrator. NY Times best seller of “Uni the Unicorn”. She’s also participating in gallery shows, which is pretty cool).

I have many more suggestions, but I’ll keep the list down to 4, for now…(smile)

If you’re thinking of interviewing an author (non-illustrator), Mac Barnett would be awesome! I especially like how he shares how many rejections he had before getting published.

What might also be fun are interviews with SVS graduates who landed illustration jobs/agents.

All the things Lee talked about in Photoshop Functions not available in other programs are mostly available in Procreate (My go to Art Program now). Procreate has most if not all Blend Modes available in PS. I also have a workaround for using Gradients similar to how PS does it. That being said, I also use PS a lot for image editing and printing images. I have the full CC subscription. Also I have used PS since 1996.

@john-garrett yep! that is what we were talking about. There is work arounds in almost every program. But my point was it almost always ends with photoshop to be fully print ready. I love all the programs out there. But I still think knowing photoshop really well for what you do will help most people. Of course there are examples where this wouldn't apply, but in general photoshop is still the standard. These other programs are just getting more and more powerful though, so who knows how it will all shake out over the next few years. : )

I have a question about mailing postcards. If art directors/editors/etc are working from home long term wouldn’t they get their work mail forwarded to their home?

Honestly this one kind of bummed me out. I can’t stand photoshop. I still find it hard to believe that it’s a necessity. I’ve never needed photoshop for anything. I know they say to just bite the bullet and start learning but photoshop ain’t cheap and it’s hard to justify buying something I have yet to find the need for.

@holleywilliamson good question! Right before the holiday, I sent Christmas cards to some editors and ADs I have been in contact during 2021. All of them working from home at this moment obviously. I will let you know if I hear from them about receiving my card.
