Re: UPDATED with Value Study! My #draw50things Project. Feedback requested.
Hi Everyone! I'm finally back working on my #draw50things assignment and would love your feedback again.
I've taken into account @marek-halko's paint over and everyone else's advice and have a new version to show you below. This is just the background without the main jellyfish character and without the color tint that I will eventually add.
I've finished all of the detail work and would love to hear what you think. I'm still open to any thoughts changes you might have.
Thanks and can't wait to hear what you think!

@JoshuaDages It looks great!!

@JoshuaDages This is looking awesome! I love the camera angle/perspective you chose to draw this in. It makes it that much more interesting to look at.
-
@marek-halko Thank you! And thank you again for your paint over and notes. It was extremely helpful!
-
@Jacy13 Thank you! I played around with it a lot before I got it how I liked it. I am going to add some "watery" effects and bubbles as well, to make sure it has a full under-water look.

Hi @JoshuaDages, looks amazing! I have yet to complete the draw50 challenge, but it’s on my to-list! I like the feel of everything leaning to the left and the turtle and shark in the ocean curiously peaking through. I see a pesky crab made its way in!
The only minor thing I noticed was the mermaid’s face is partially cutoff in the frame. I can’t remember where I heard the composition rule to not cutoff a face, but maybe this is okay since it’s a statue.
Great work overall!

Loving your choice of perspective!
Maybe you could hint at the cast shadow of the window frame on the bed/sofa... that would look cool.
-
Wow, this is a really engaging illustration; you can really tell something horrible happened to the ship! Right away the lighting made a good impression.
Looking closer, I felt that a number of items lacked detail-- specifically those which are cast in the light. Nothing is reall missing, but i believe that certain items (the carpet, the inside of the chest lid, and the birdcage) would benefit from some very sparing details. Woodgrain, fabric lumpyness, consistent lines for the metal cage, etc.
Other than that I don't see that you would have much left before you could consider your work good to go! Kudos for illustrating 50 objects! You have a knack for balancing the weight of detail and value!

@Jeremy-Ross Thanks! I have been struggling with the "half-face rule" with the mermaid. As she is not subject of the image I'm afraid of making her face too obvious because I don't want her to attract attention. I agree though that it doesn't sit well with the viewer. Thanks and I'll keep working on it!
-
@txels That's a great observation about the window frame that I didn't even think of. Thank you! I will definitely add that.
-
@Jabbernewt Thank you for your kind words! I see what you mean about the lack of detail on those items. I will work on them and make sure I didn't miss any others like that. And yes, I'm looking forward to calling it complete! I've probably taken way too much time on it if I want to ever do this for a living, haha.

Just wanted to say that this is really nice and I want to see how it turns out, so I'm following. And I went back and read the whole thread, so thanks for linking.
I'm doing a 25 things and that's complicated enough, so kudos! These can take quite a while, and tangents and other trip ups are everywhere, so hang in there. It will be worth it!

@JoshuaDages Hi Joshua,
Just wanted to stick my head in to say that I love your piece! You have hit this assignment spot on. I did a draw over just to show that you can push it even further with the foreground and you can get even more objects in close if you wanted.
-
@Will-Terry Hi Will! Thank you so much for your encouragement and your draw over. I love that idea and will continue to work on it. I am really excited to finalize everything and put it in my portfolio. I really enjoyed your class and learned a ton from it. Thanks again!
-
@LauraA Thank you! It's been very challenging, but fun. Good luck with your 25 things as well. Have you posted it on the forum? I'd love to take a look.
-
@JoshuaDages This looks so awesome! Very inspiring
-
@Kiel-Ewing Thanks Kiel!
-
Wow this looks awesome! Such a great idea - I love that everything's angled and all the details you've put in. Makes you wonder who owned the ship and what happened. I can almost hear the timbers creaking. Fab!
-
@ruth Sorry, just saw this! Thank you so much! I am really happy with the idea and am getting close to completion so stay tuned!

Hi Everyone!
Here it is! My #draw50things illustration is complete! After months of work (probably should get a little faster, haha) I'm ready to put it in my portfolio.
Thanks to everyone's help and comments with this (@LauraA @Will-Terry @Kiel-Ewing @ruth @marek-halko @Jeremy-Ross @txels @Jacy13 @Jabbernewt @Ruth-Tripp @Heather-Boyd @chrisaakins) and anyone else I've missed!
Let me know what you think!
