How much to charge for 1st illustration?

  • A local furniture company wants me to design a price slashing super hero type character for them. It would be used in house only on stickers, social media, and flyers. I have no idea what to charge. I know their budget is small because of Covid-19. I would like the work for a resume/portfolio and I don’t really need the money per se, but I do want to charge an appropriate amount even on the cheap side. Any ideas? I was thinking a couple of hundred bucks? I work fast and it probably wouldn’t take me but 4-8 hours to do so. Is that too low? It is for someone I have known my whole life and could potentially lead to more business in the area. It is a well known company in my town. Help me, forum people!

  • Find out what their budget is for this job. Then negotiate with them based on that number and the kind of work you are willing to do for that price and time allowed.

Find out where its going to be used and how its going to be used.

  • @ArtofAleksey they didn’t have a set amount in mind. I looked online and 25 an hour is a good flat rate for someone just starting out.

@chrisaakins I was going to say a couple hundred as well.

  • Hi @chrisaakins, why not do a trade job of some nice furniture priced at $500? Usually furniture is marked up 200% so you could still get something really nice around the price you were willing to charge. Just a thought since this person seems to be a friend of yours.

Personally instead of $25 I'd ask for $50 and give them a cap on how much it could be. You might end up working for $25 an hour in the end because it might take you longer than a pro, but it would help set a rate you'd be happy about if they asked for more work and you don't keep asking for more money feeling like you're getting screwed and trying to be nice.

That or a nice couch 😛
