People and Character Studies in November
-
Hi! Both @Heather-Boyd and I are, coincidentally, working on our people skills and character studies in November. So we thought to do it together. And I am inviting anyone else to join us. We can share our progress here and if we post to Instagram, tag each other there.
I've put together a list of SVS classes that touch on people and character design skills, some from Heathers list and some from mine, so theres A LOT. If you can finish these in one month then you are a jedi.
- Drawing Fundamentals
- How to Draw Gesture
- Stylizing Human Characters
- Posing Characters
- Breathing Life into Your Character Designs (this class is HUGE)
- Master studies (personal choice)
These are videos that I am going to watch and listen to for nuggets of gold while doing the homework for the other classes.
• Design and Color: Hair (because Ty Carter)
• Characters and Conversations
• Painting the Head
• My Favorite Monster Demo: Part 1: Concept and Design
• Stylizing PortraitsThese I will do after I've done everything else. Lol.
• Drawing Heroes and Sidekicks
• Drawing Villains and MonstersI am not an awesome teacher/ organizer/ cheerleader like @Braden-Hallett so this is the only instruction you will get from me,
Draw at your own pace, have fun and share with us. -
Still trying to organize how I am going to do this and how to make it successful. I will keep you updated.
Edited version
Cut the 4 weeks and tackle the following:- Legs and Feet with Gesture Class
- Hips and Torso with Stylizing Human Characters Class
- Shoulders, Arms and Hands with (see how above classes go)
- Neck, Head and Hair with Stylizing Portraits
Classes are reasonably small 10-40$
I.e Legs and Feet draw from reference and tutorials along with the Gesture Class.I am taking out master studies. By the end of the month aim to draw one full figure, ideally a child with an clean silhouette.
Work in traditional pencil. I moved to Corel Painter and can’t find the soft cover pencil I’m accustomed to in the Essential version, ugh.
And depending on time once a week writing story excerpt. Yah!
Sound acheievable?
I’ve already planned December and January, with Master Perspective Class and Digital Painting 1 work through painting landscape etc. 2 months minimum they are large classes.

-

-
@Heather-Boyd Keep it simple. It's a lot of info. I'm shooting for the moon but will probably land on the ISS.
-
Drawing America put up some online courses of his lectures. I have found his ig tv tutorials to be extremely easy to follow for me so I’m gonna give his courses a shot. Sadly it’s the same price as svslearn but only 3 courses so far.
Heres the link if you wanna see what im talking about

@Aleksey Cool, Thanx! Will you still share with us? I'd be interested to know how you like it.
-
@burvantill sure I could do that
-
I have a Pinterest board with a lot of really
cute kids on it for drawing practice. If anyone is interested. I’m trying to make one of actual illustrations of children but I can’t stop looking at all the cutie patooties. Lol -
@burvantill OGD lols
-
@Heather-Boyd I know! I stopped They’re just too damn cute. I made a new board last night with actual illustrations on it. Went a little overboard on the Norman Rockwell’s. I like the more realistic style. I just need to get my skills up this month so I can compete with Norm.
What’s the link to your board? -
I don’t know how to share but I did start following some of your boards so you should be able to find me that way. I don’t have a specific board anymore. But whatever interests you because I’m still cleaning it up.
-
I feel like you both will be blackbelts in character design after this!! Can’t wait to see what you’re able to put out. Good luck on your journey!
-
@SFischer thank you, we shall see.
-
I'm doing characters too! Possible book project with an author friend! Needing to develop the characters and I'm better at animals than people so I'm working at it. Are you gals posting your sketches here? Or anywhere?
-
@Coley here and Instagram just haven’t yet. I’ve done a page practising legs after I watched the first section in the Gesture Class.
-
@Heather-Boyd cool. I'm kinda working away at some faces/heads/a bit of body sketch stuff today.. no pressure sorta stuff just figuring things out and what I like and think looks good/ Trying to recreate what I like is the problem lol! consistency.......
I did gesture class and tons of practice back int he spring, it really really helped. I did over 700 gesture drawings! And still need to do more........... -
@Coley what heather said. And I also have only done one worksheet. I didn’t think it was post worthy but I’ll post it anyway... tomorrow.
-
@Coley wow 700!
-
@burvantill I will post a series probably at the end of each week to show progress and/ or a mid Tuesday week short.
