Pencil Style
-
Hey guys.
Recently I've been drawing in more of a digital pencil style.
I'm really wanting to push this style further. Do any of you know of artists, other than our wonderful Will Terry, who use this style or something similar?
Thanks

Thanks @StudioLooong that's exactly what I was looking for. It looks like Sean Farrell is the author and Charles Santoso is the illustrator.

@skillydan ahh yeah you're right. The author's name just came to mind and I didn't even look at the credits on the book :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_cold_sweat: no wonder I couldn't find the guy's portfolio website! oops

@StudioLooong haha no worries.
Here's his instagram https://instagram.com/charlessantoso?igshid=y94s8v3pba1r
And website http://www.charlessantoso.com/
I really like their stuff. Thanks for the reference.

Interested in this too...following along for more names.

Definitely check out the work of Juana Martinez-Neal. She works in mixed media but most of the actual texture and detail of her work is done with colored pencil. She received a Caldecott Honor this year for her book Alma. The art for that book is beautiful.

Some of Tom Booth's illustrations have that heavy textured pencil feel, maybe more Eduardo Vieira's style? I love how evocative you can be with lines and texture that pencils allow. It appears a tricky balance since too little can look lazy and sloppy and too much just feels heavy. I think the trick is being purposeful with the scratches and not doing it to simply cut corners and hide imperfections.
I encourage your exploration though! God luck!

@bathyscaph thanks for the suggestion. That combination of simple shapes, limited palette and contrast in texture is so nice!
@pagurcia I love Tom Booth! I've been following him for a while on Instagram and completely fell in love with his woodcutter story. I can't wait to see what he does with it. Thanks for the encouragement!
