I have been working on using triadic colour schemes in double page spreads.

Pencil Style
Hey guys.
Recently I've been drawing in more of a digital pencil style.
I'm really wanting to push this style further. Do any of you know of artists, other than our wonderful Will Terry, who use this style or something similar?
Thanks

RE: Need help with portfolio piece
Hi @Heather-Bouteneff looks like the values of the hedge, ground and animals are pretty close. I've turned your image black and white to demonstrate what I mean.
I took your drawing and quickly darkened the bushes and floor (with my finger on my phone so it's a bit messy). The characters aren't quite as lost within the hedge.
The focal point is the exchange of the apple between the two human characters. I'd suggest upping the contrast even more around them by lightening the sky around their heads maybe. Maybe even drop that top of the hedge down a bit so the figures are silhouetted against the sky. The line of the top of the hedge is touching the girls hand which slightly obscures the action of her throwing the apple.
Hope that helps

Moment Before Dragon Egg WIP
Hi guys.
For this month's competition I went for the moment before things get very toasty for this wandering dwarf. I was trying to push the separation of the foreground and background characters. Using cool lighter colours and lighting for the foreground and darker warmer colours for the background. I wanted to try and push the dragon back as far into the shadow as possible so that it would almost be a second read with the inner mouth glow signalling that something lay in the gloom.
The things I'm not currently sure about are whether the dwarf pops out too much that he doesn't like he's in the same room as the dragon. The more I look at it the more i feel he should have stronger shadows.
Thanks,
Daniel -
RE: Help with values/focal point
I'm a bit happier with it after going back and reworking the warms and cools into patches of light.

RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio November 2020 ๐
This week I've been throwing stuff together for my redbubble store. The layout and pattern design are inspired by Jarod Maruyama who does merchandising for Disney.
The characters and shapes will also be in a sticker pack.
Working on these guys too. Wish I'd got them out for Halloween.

RE: Making art process video tutorials?
I think that is a great idea. I have purchased process pdfs and videos from Gumroad before.
If you're looking for other ways to open a shop there is also a market on etsy for digital art. I believe @NessIllustration mentioned doing this in one of her videos.

RE: JANUARY CONTEST: YETI HOME
@Gaelle-Grizzly This is great. I love the details in the blueprint. Really well thought out and executed!

RE: Illustration Critique
I'm a little late to the party but just wanted to add my 2 cents. I would de-saturate everything apart from the teapot and push up the saturation on the teapot. This will make everything a bit cooler and your focal point warmer.
I would also add a bit of a shadow behind the teapot to push it out from the background.

RE: Whatโs missing?
Hi @phoenix-yip I absolutely love the design of this piece.
I must admit on my first look I completely missed the character sat at the base of the sword.
I would go even further than what you've done here and darken the area around the character to make their silhouette pop out to the viewer.
I hope you don't mind I've done a very quick paint over to show you what I was thinking

RE: Making a New Book - Documenting my own process
Hi @Gary-Wilkinson can I ask how you chose your color palette?
Its clear from your thumbnails that there is a consistent palette running through the book but you're not limiting yourself and including saturated blues, greens, purples, reds, oranges etc.
This is something I struggle with so its nice to see it done so well. I often find my colors losing saturation as I try to make them work together.
Great job.
