WIP Mermay Post
-
Greetings SVS Folks -
Please see below my WIP for the Mermay contest. I'm just not sure if there is enough going on in the image to make it interesting. I haven't rendered everything and still playing around with the pieces.
The idea is that the mermaid and fish found a record player and perhaps hearing music for the first time. Is this coming across? (Any other input is most appreciated.)
Thank you!!

@djly I think it reads. I would have all the fish happy. I know you said you are not done and you are moving things around, but the one fish right now looks a little sad. Maybe add an octopus (because they are my favorite of all time) cranking the handle of the record player so we know how it started playing the music.

@Chip-Valecek thanks so much for this feedback! Those ideas are really helpful for moving forward. I wasn’t sure where to go with the expressions of the fish but that really helps. Octopus are awesome!

@djly I like the textures and the layout. You might want to move the record player down a little bit to be in the 1/3x1/3 hot zone?
I had a random thought about the tail... when I saw the outline it made me think of a dancing fan that a woman would hold in front of her face. It might add some interest to do something like that?
Good luck!

@theprairiefox thank you so much for taking the time to review. I’ll definitely take a look at the record placement, and love the idea of a fan tail! Thanks again.

It’s a fun concept. In order to make it feel less empty, you could pull the record player more into the foreground and enlarge it, or enlarge the weeds on the left to frame the picture. Right now, the weeds, record player, and mermaid are all of similar size so some variation would help add interest.
-
@demotlj - that’s a really good point about having some size variation. I’ll work on that aspect of the piece. Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated!

Here is an updated version of the mermaid piece. I'm struggling whether or not there is enough balance on the mermaid side of the piece? Any input is most appreciated.
Thank you!!

@djly if you add more coral reef under the mermaid I think that would help.
-
@Chip-Valecek - thank you! I’ll give it a go! Thanks for your help.

Here is my final submission. I learned a lot during this process. Thanks to everyone for their help!
