WIP - question

For the past year, I have been working on a Children's book for my niece (a re-imagining of the biblical story of Balaam's Donkey) which started out as simple line and wash. Because of SVS, I've been enjoying experimenting with a more painterly style so I did this picture. (It's a set up for the next picture when the characters are trapped in a canyon with nowhere to turn so you're not supposed to see the characters well in this picture.) My question is about the edges. I'm using digital pastels with Procreate and some of the "canvas" shows through on the foreground. Should I make the color more opaque? Any other suggestions?
Of course, if I were ever to self-publish this, I'd have to go back and choose a consistent style but right now the only audience is my four year old niece so it doesn't really matter.

Can you turn down the opacity on the canvas layer? I was having a similar problem in Photoshop and that fixed it. Not sure if that helps.

@jason-bowen There isn’t a canvas per se in Procreate. I believe the canvas effect is through the brush itself.

@andy-gray Thanks for your comment. Part of my indecision was that I also like the texture but because I’m new at this whole painterly style, I don’t trust my instincts. I’m trying to stop worrying about whether I’m “doing it right” and just paint what I like but I don’t have enough experience yet to know when I should be worrying!

I think it's a question of style really, and what you are going for. How do you like the canvas texture coming through? Personally I think it looks nice, and it's often done in one form or another to add some texture to a digital painting.
I cant help with the technical aspect, but if you could tone it down a bit in certain areas and leave others more prominent maybe that would work better.
As for the image itself, I think you could work a bit on the silhoutte of the donkey and rider. Imagine looking at it without knowing the story, or anything about the image, does it read easily that its a rider on a donkey? Push the values a bit so their is more contrast on your focal point, and make the silhouette read better, and it will look fantastic.

@kelanhordos I definitely agree that the donkey and rider need more definition. I'm still struggling to get good definition without line so I'll play with that more. I'm not sure what you mean by "tone it down a bit in some areas and leave others prominent." Could you explain a little more about that?

Well, I don't know about procreate, but in a program like Photoshop you can adjust the opacity or flow, and how much texture is coming through on the brush. If you feel the canvas texture is too similar across the entire picture, you could adjust it to have more in certain areas than others.
