Water ripples trouble
-
I've been struggling getting the water lighting/ripples right in this picture. I've struggled to find good reference pictures, so I've been trying to make it up, and I don't think I'm getting it right. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Hey I really like this idea. I think changing the angle of the boat might help you out. Also I added some cool light to bring your character out a bit. Hope you don't mind just an idea. Maybe some reflections will help the boat sit on the water? Hope it helps

Is the boat moving or standing still? As you have it now, the boat is moving forward but since no one is rowing it, I’m assuming you want it just floating in which case ripples would be all around it. It’s hard to do ripples in dark water but in general the moonlight hits the top of the ripple ridge and the trough of the ripple is slightly darker than the surrounding water. That’s when the moon is in the sky of course so I don’t know what happens when the moon is under water

Not sure if it will help but the movie, The life of Pi had a great scene with luminescent planken and a jumping whale that might give you some good reference to look into for how a glowing light is with the ripples.
Also I just wanted to mention that I was a little thrown off with the perspective of the moon. Perhaps look at fixing the ellipses as they exit the water. They should be perpendicular to the sea.

Google Christian Riese Lassen Art. His work is a little bit cheesy for my taste but you will find some reference for what you are trying to do.

if you want some videos on painting water go to y-tube and search "mural joe" he does a really good job of teaching you how water and waves work so you understand it more and don't need to use copy reference as much

@jason-bowen Yes, that does look better!

@demotlj I was thinking it was still gently drifting forwards, moving on momentum but sitting still would probably make more sense.

@rcartwright Thank you! Off to watch some of his videos.

@rcartwright I see what you mean

Aaron Blaise just did a livestream on his youtube channel on water. I'm sure its posted there now you can watch it again.
