Riley value study

Okay, here’s my value study for the Riley prompt. I wanted to focus more on the people outside the garage. Is this reading okay? I had some other thumbnails, but this was my favorite. Actually the only one I got excited about.

These values are working but I worry that putting more focus on the people might be steering too far from the prompt. I could be wrong but I’m curious what to hear what others think.

I agree with Griffin. Love the idea and forced background but seeing as "messy Garage" is an important part of the prompt(one I'm dealing with myself) I think too much shadow would be a struggle there. Of course you just want a great portfolio piece.....go for it!

@griffin Thank you! That actually makes a lot of sense. I did try some versions looking into the garage and didn’t like any of them.
I am definitely planning on detailing the mess. But, I want to focal point to be the dad’s reaction to opening the garage. Couldn’t figure out how to do that without getting into a super weird angle. I had one sketch where he was walking in through a side door, but it was boring… I’m not skilled enough at perspective to push the angles and things. I think, your right, I might be a little off the prompt, but that’s okay. I’m more hoping for a good portfolio piece than anything. -
I really like the approach! I personally would tune down the contrast of the watching people and the background houses so they blend more together, make the houses lighter value. That way the high contrast and focal point is really the boy.

@sonja-müller I think so too. If I follow Lees “5 value” system, I think those houses would be a lot lighter. Now, I’m at that hard part of trying to figure out how to translate this into a working piece. I’ll probably do a couple color studies to work on those values.thank you!
