      Art by Carlianne Tipsey

How do you STAY in the illustration business after you start getting work? How can you tell if an art school is good? How long should a book dummy take, and are you slow or fast? And when is the best time to upgrade your Cintiq? This week, Jake Parker, Lee White, and Will Terry discuss the answers to these questions and give an update on Children’s Book Pro, the new course from SVSLearn.

I think that Will forgetting the name of a movie -- and then Lee and Jake vainly trying to throw out movie titles (the first 5 of which must always be completely wrong) -- should be a new feature of the podcast.

One thing I did that helped me decide on which art school to go to was to look at the portfolios of the students. Most colleges post student work so it was easy to find. If the students aren’t doing work that is similar to the kind of work you want to be doing it is probably not a good fit.

@carlianne your podcast art is so cool! I loved the animated alligators in the story post. Did you do that or did they add it?

Does anyone know what Art school Will was talking about in this episode? It may have been super obvious and I just missed it. Thanks!

The time/speed bit is worth some mentioning I think. This is something that nags me from time to time. I wish I could draw, sketch, paint, overall work faster than I do — so I can create more pieces, have more to show online, overcome my thousands of bad drawings faster, have greater chances of making it in the biz. But with a day job and family duties in between, there's a limit on the amount of time and energy I can devote to it all. I know I'm not alone on this feeling though.

This episode was really an eye opener for me with this Image Comics suggestion, they had been in my radar while making my comics but I had no idea the submission process was so simple and so broad, has anyone here submitted before, approved or not? How did you find the process and manner of Image when dealing with you if you got any response or feedback?

I was like what?? when Lee Was saying he has only a day time for euch painting when working on childrensbooks. I need at least two days just for the finished sketch and a week at least to get a whole painting done. This really made me think of how I could speed up my process...
