@donnamakesart thank you!! Iβm not sure how long I can keep it up for but keeping it to an hour has been helping me feel like itβs doable and motivated, that and a bunch of reference saved ahead of time
-
@carlianne Urrgghhh, I love your style so much!!

This was a warmup sketch that went a bit far.
Link keeps getting sidetracked, just as the majority of artists. -
Finally finished the first batch of studies!!! So proud haha Thinking what I want to focus on for the next batch

I've been hard at work tackling this mini comic project I've developed. Here is my first page of thumbnails and I'm starting on the refined sketches! This story's main character is the one I'm working on for this month's contest. Her name is Ember, and she is a potion maker at the Purple Raven Apothecary, in the town of Superstitious. This is my first try at a comic, so it's all new to me! I just really wanted to give it a shot. I'm already finding that it involves quite a bit of work I'm curious to see what I can do in about six pages. It's a learning experience for sure.

Today's quick paint study
-
@carlianne things I found on Piterest :))
I titled the board gouache but decided last minute to paint it digitally haha: https://pin.it/6y3FW1s
-
@donnamakesart oh yes I will steal from you
-
Moving on to my comfort zones! Pretty girls... but with backgrounds. Lighting as a secondary focus
Challenging myself to strip down the details and the brush strokes to bare minimum, just enough to get the mood I want across.
-
@donnamakesart you and I are basically working on the same thing right now οΈ These look great!
-
@carlianne yeaaaah nice to find someone to art with virtual high fives

I got all the bird illustrations done for my calendar I'm going to put out this fall for 2022--the last ones completed live on my new art stream Twitch channel, which was fun.
Then I started my first iterations of thumbnailing for my first practice book dummy. I'm using text I bought on Amazon from Diana Kimpton specifically offered and intended as practice text for illustrators to use for book dummies (of all the things you find on Amazon, that was the last thing I expected...hehe...). The story is very sweet and rich with visual opportunities. I'm having fun and feel invested in it now, so I'm hunkering down for the long haul to do the work. Incredibly rough at this point, and haven't even thought of doing value studies yet, and I am going to have to take some time to do studies of horses and forests, but it's all very exciting and laden with potential to me at this point. Doing it all in Procreate.
I also put together a new portfolio for review by Brian Lies this next month, part of my local SCBWI chapter's big annual Mayfest event. I've heard he offers great advice, so I'm looking forward to it.
Between all of this, my art newsletter I just put out, the classes I teach at my university, as well as the theatrical costuming I do for my full-time day job, it's a lot on my plate. But it's all good. I feel like I'm moving forward as an illustrator.
