Chapter Book Illustration Samples WIP

Hey friends,
Thought I would share some of my Chapter Book illustration samples -- I wanted to beef up my portfolio and have something more to submit while I work on a different picture book dummy. I chose James and the Giant Peach as my subject and got to work. Pieces are ink, watercolor on mixed media board. I think I'll do a total of 6 and move on to something else.

These are amazing!! Kudos!!! I don't know why it seems hard to find examples of this kind of work, but I appreciate your sharing! These are just lovely!! Congrats!!!

Aw, thanks Thats a good question! My agent was a little less thrilled by me setting aside time for these vs. knocking out a picture book because its a bit harder to sell me just as an illustrator but as I look at my schedule and interests, I would enjoy working on 1-2 picture books while on the side I work on something like this.
If anything, these are some of the most free I have felt drawing in months so I'll take that as the biggest win.

@AnthonyWheeler One of my favorite stories. Are you going to color these?

super!

@AnthonyWheeler all of the pieces look amazing! I love your linework. It’s really beautiful. If there’s anything I would change, I’d suggest making the house on the hill more wonky and quirkier. Maybe play with it’s proportions. Maybe make it slant or curve. Everything looks so whimsical but I think the house needs a little bit push. I’m excited to see where you’ll take this piece.

Thank you! Not with this set...Going to leave them gray to hopefully appeal to the mass market chapter book world. I may do a cover treatment tho with a fully painted scene for this set of samples.
Next is a very colorful watercolor painted picture book project
Cheers

Lovely linework! I have been working on chapter book samples too so it is exciting to see yours. Can we ask about media? Specifically what medium are you using for linework on these? Thanks

Hi! We need to share our secrets! I have a feeling this is a tough nut to crack.
I'm a brushpen guy. I use a kaimei brushpen with carbon black ink.

@AnthonyWheeler These illustrations are so cool. The inking is superb! I really feel like you captured the essence/style of the story. Amazing work!

Forgot to mention...that pen is sometimes way too fast (for me) on plate or slick paper. I use a Mixed Media board that is 1/16th inch thick, its super textured and porous and it slows the strokes way down.
