Discover the richness of SVS

Hey there,

I am Julia, living in Vienna,AT. I discovered SVS three weeks ago and I am so eagerly watching all the courses/learning so much, that I already have to cope with the fear that one day in the not so distant future there won't be any more new courses left take ;-).
It is an exciting learning environment so I wanted to also check out the forum now and see what everyone else here is up to, stalk a bit on people's art and learning progresses ;-).

As a little tip for UK/EU members here on SVS: anyone in close proximity to London, who can travel there easily: you might want to check out the one-week illustration summer courses Central Saint Martins has to offer in June/July. Most likely we would see each other there

I love the background pattern of your piece.

I did the illustration course at Central Saint Martins. It is a great overview of everything and gives you lots of exercises and ideas. Plus its really fun to meet lot of interesting people.
Not much theory but its defiantly not trying to be a theory course.

Are you booked in over Easter? Have you already been?

And don't worry about the videos, I have been a subscriber for almost 2 years and I watched almost every video, but they keep adding more, and I keep rewatching some of them (e.g. I watched visual storytelling techniques by @Lee-White at least 3 times) and every time I learn something new! And they keep adding new stuff all the time!

NoWayMe hit on a very important note. The real benefit of the videos is watching them and doing the work in them. First try what the artist/teacher is doing in the video, then try to make it your own. I would say you could maybe do 1 video a month if you were really motivated.

Watching a lot of the videos back to back may seem like education, but it rarely creates lasting effects on the work. I equate it to "entertainment" more than education if you aren't doing the work that is suggested in the videos.

We are also moving to a more interactive type class and I'm currently running the 2nd term of my 10 week illustration class with David Hohn teaching as well. Will is getting ready to start a live class and we have a lot more videos coming out soon too. Should keep you busy for a while! : )

@sarahelliott489 Hey cool to hear from you, would ypu maybe like to tell a bit more about how the Central Saint Martins course works? How many people are normally being taught alongside? What were the most important points to take home? Is there any way to prepare for the course in advance? What is the level of the students? Your insight would be so helpful.

@Lee-White Great comments. I defiantly watched loads when I first joined because there felt like there was so much to do but I did them too quickly. Now I am revisiting some and really working through lots of personal assignments alongside the information. But its still great to watch them during my lunch hour! I don't think I will run out as there are so many and I have needed to repeat some.

@Napoleon So the course. I am not sure if yours is exactly the same as mine as they do many. Mine was introduction to illustration. We had around 8 in the class, all girls. They where all mixed levels and different ages. A lot of them were looking into thinking about what type of degree to do and where to focus on after leaving school. Some of them wanted to have career changes so were looking into different areas. You don't need to prepare anything in advance but they do ask you to bring in some of your previous work. I loved that day as time was quite limited in the class so it was great to see how impressive some peoples work was when they had more time. I really enjoyed seeing everyone approach the same task and come out with totally different results!
The most important resource is the teacher. She was fantastic. Really nice and a practicing illustrator. Her work was lovely. I think the best thing about the course was being able to ask loads of questions so ask them all! If she didn't know she would find out and come back to you the next day.
My main thing about the course was everyone's enthusiasm. I had mostly been practicing on my own so to be with other people and get some encouragement was what I needed from the course.
