SVS Virtual Studio JUNE 2022🌞

@Solomon-Designs I really like you control of colour and values here.
-
@PenAndrew thank you! That means alot because I really went back in forth messing with saturation to create the focal point.
-
@Solomon-Designs Yes, It is obvious that you have spent a lot of time with this image and it shows a lot of knowledge. I still have not had much of a chance to apply this thinking in my work. Are you developing a comic book style?
-
@PenAndrew what’s really helped me is @Will-Terry’s YouTube videos and the svs courses. (Although I also took fine arts classes in college for graphic design) I’m trying to develop a children’s book style but love comics and video games. Thank you for the nice words btw.
-
@Solomon-Designs Yes all the courses provide different levels of help, I have recently been watching The Robots and Machinery course and Drawing comics course lectures from Jake Parker, and learnt new things about comics and I liked what Jake said about the courses at SVS providing Road Maps, I really think that's true. You can see where you are on that map and a pathway ahead to reach your goal and what steps you have to take to get there.
-
@Solomon-Designs Yes I think aspects of Graphic Design, such as lettering can really help illustration and the Graphic Design artists on the forum are doing really well with their illustration. It is a pity that these skills get separated off, but that's the way of the world. Specialisation! Before I studied I applied to a Graphic Design Diploma course as I felt the work reflected something about my interests.
-
@PenAndrew Nice! I’ll have to check that course out. I’m finishing up developing visual stories. The road map analogy is so true. I’m truly so thankful for svs because I graduated a graphic design program but honestly don’t like graphic design very much. Luckily I’m able to learn illustration through svs. I definitely learned design can be far from illustration.
-
@Solomon-Designs Yes it goes in a more abstract direction I believe, I think the Graphic Design I like must have some drawing attached to it, like packaging design or labels for products, this kind of thing. In fact in China there's a lot more interesting packaging design. I use an old cake box to store things- will post an image in a moment to show you.

Spring festival Design -Chinese New Year!
-
@PenAndrew nice, yes there is some illustration involved in graphic design if it solves the clients marketing issue. A lot of times I’m doing lots of work with type and layouts and very little illustration and very little animation.
-
So my 7 year old drew this yesterday. I swear she's gonna be teaching me her ways in no time. Anyone else's kids big into art? I'm blown away by mine every time she picks up a pencil crayon
-
@AngelinaKizz Tell her she did a great job! I don't think that I could draw to this level until I was maybe 10 or11.
-
@PenAndrew me either! With things like YouTube and online drawing classes, I feel like they progress so much faster. I had to learn by teaching myself and drawing every day for hours on end. She's just flying through her learning process. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes.
-
@AngelinaKizz Yes, I look forward to seeing her progress. My Great -niece is also into drawing encouraged by my sister, her grandmother.
-
@AngelinaKizz Yes, this is one of the positive things about growing up in the age of the internet. Maybe.
-
More progress… slow but not so steady. Lots and lots of feathers…
-
Pride month image (more graphic novel like than children's book perhaps)
-
@chrisaakins Haha, looking great so far Chris!

Went by the bookstore and bought three picture books. I was looking for books that were in the vein of how I like to render illustrations. I found one treasure especially: Ryan T Higgins’ book Mother Bruce. I was inspired to see if I could emulate his style using Inky from my mice stories.
Here is a snapshot of Higgin’s work from his website:
And here is my rendering of Inky enjoying the summer night.
Not half bad! I wasn’t going so much for his stylization so much as his line work and coloring. His line work has very thick outlines and lots of thin messy lines for texture. He uses a single texture overlay on all his coloring and looks like digital watercolor.
