A "homework" project to change feeling of image through values

Every so often I try out new assignments for myself. I love the idea that by simply changing the lighting of a scene you can alter the experience for the viewer. I recently had a go with this european village photo I found. Starting with this bright, sunny daytime scene ...

I spent a few hours turning it into this moody, mysterious night scene.

Pretty fun! Just thought I'd share.

@davidhohn Love it too, so much. I love the nighttime glow and mist combo. I love mist period. Do you still use reference for light from time to time or pretty much have enough experience/memory to put it together on your own?

@davidhohn I was just thinking of doing something like this the other day! I was thinking that I would love it if there was an assignment in a class that focused on painting the same environment in a few different lightings to change the mood.

@davidhohn This is an awesome exercise. Goes to show how important the values are! Values make a huge difference in how we interpret a scene/image for sure

@Griffin is there not a colour and light class that has something similar. I have seen others work.

@Heather-Boyd I’m not sure. I haven’t dug into those classes much yet, only some of the foundation classes so there may already be something like that out there!

@Heather-Boyd I'm using reference for the lighting on this. Other screen shots from movies and photos with similar lighting setups. The learning never stops!

@Griffin That's a good idea! I know that @Lee-White and I included a shorter exercise in our Turbocharging Your Creativity class here on SVS. I'm even playing with applying it beyond environments to portraits. Can you alter how someone feels about a person by changing the lighting and color scheme on the same reference photo?

@Jacy13 I really remember how it stood out to me when watching Toy Story 3 and the Sunnyside Daycare sets. Initially all sunny, bright and friendly and later, same set, but all depressing and prison-like.

So good! This also makes me think of the SVS livestream with Pascal where he with complete ease switched from one mood to the next throughout the same painting, it was awesome to watch.

Thanks for sharing this, it's really neat to see that you still give yourself assignments.
