Could use some critique - environment piece
-
Hi there, SVS people!
Comin' in with a little critique request.
I am currently working on an environment for a small animated scene and I think I've hit a brick wall here.
Could use a fresh pair of eyes.I myself do not have much experience with drawing environments. My art journey has been centered around characters, so this background layout has made me struggle.
Here it is:
clean environment
The compostion is build with a character in a scene in mind, so here's a quick mock up of how that'd look.
annnnndd a greyscale.Truth be told, I kinnnndaaa like it but it is missing SOMETHING and due to my lack of experience in the field, I can't indentify that thing.
What do you think could be missing?
Do you see any obvious mistakes?
How's that value structure holding up?Any critique is welcome, really.

I think this looks pretty cool!!! What it might be missing is just more items! and the area to the left of the entrance is kinda blank, which contribute to that 'somethings missing' feeling.
-
@Frost-Drive Hmmm, more items
I was afraid it might get too busy, but I guess it is worth a shot!
Actually, looking at it now, I think it may be the key! Thanks!I left the left ( hoho! ) side more empty to frame his head nicely (that's where most of animation will take place and I dont want anything potentially distracting there) but I'll add more stuff in other places. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

@IgorWoznicki i think it holds up fine compositionally, its a really solid drawing, characters are great. Looks good! I think though for an evil underground-type secret base, everythings super clean. It looks like the lab was built yersterday, theres no texture on anything. Maybe a little fluid dripping from pipes, rust on cylinders, rocks on the floor etc. Even just a few hatch marks to indicate form might help it a bit.
-
Hi @IgorWoznicki, I think it looks great, but here a few things that stood out to me.
-
The lab bench is really low, perhaps consider raising it a bit more.
-
If this is an animation, you might want to add bubbles and steam coming out of some vials?
-
What about adding some lab equipment and a computer?
-
Whatโs special about the container the scientists is walking towards? Did the experiment work?
-
If the lab has top secret experiments, maybe add a sliding door with top security key pad?
-
The sheet metal wall on the right side of the door is not carrying the curve. It looks like it goes to the right, but the bench goes all the way to the opening.
-
The vessel on the left with the hazard sign seems like it would go all the way to the ground. Maybe you can extend it down and add a valve or something.
-
The pipe coming off the hazard vessel might need a support at the horizontal run to add some detail. Also, I would remove the flange on the bend, it looks odd. Maybe add a flange on the horizontal and vertical section with elbow.
Thatโs all I see for now. Remember, Iโm not a pro so take whatever feedback you like and toss the rest

Thanks @Jeremy-Ross and @gavpartridge for taking the time to look at it.
Really appreciate itThere are some solid suggestions here. I'll take what I think is right and make adjustements. You guys just contributed to the quality of this project
