Painting colour and light 2.0 Group run through week Three!
-
Faaaaaantastic!
We now get to delve into some colour!
Reminder: Everyone's welcome to participate, but in order to have access to the classes and homework you need an SVS subscription. It's worth it.
Feel free to do digital or traditional. It's all good.
This week!
Watch:
Video A: Blending paint
Video E: Subsurface scatteringHomework:
exercise 02 and 04 in the workbook. Lots of practice blending paint!
Super bonus practice with blending paint!
-Find an awesome reference for some subsurface scattering, and render an object that shows it (google 'subsurface scattering fruit' and you'll get some awesome subjects like gummy bears and orange slices) In rendering subsurface scattering there's often a LOT of fun blending of colours.
Don't feel bad if your first attempt looks wrong, this is really hard to do!
Use your reference. Embrace your reference.
And remember, we're doing studies, not whole pieces Keep it to one object if you can.
Feel free to post your work for feedback and support here!
Next week we'll start with more lighting situations!

feeling a little under the weather so while the painkillers kick in I am procrastinating on Christmas prep and doing some coursework Exercise 02 kicked in the pants. i think.
-
@Coley Kicked in the pants indeed! Looks good

Iโve been gathering subsurface scattering images in a Pinterest board. Hereโs the link if youโre interested

Iโm the opposite. I should put a timer on when I start getting images, because when I come out of the glorious black hole that is Pinterest I have to ask what day it is?
-
Had an awesome Christmas Day chillaxin and drawin. And got all my homework done. The ice was a challenge!!! If you spot anything in it that I can change or add to make it more real, please let me know.
Thankyou @Braden-Hallett for organizing the weekly lessens. -
@burvantill this looks like so much fun! Why did this week have to converge with Christmas lols.
What brush did you use for the top blends? Yours are so effortlessly seemingly blended. I donโt if this would out right help but it be cool to know how use is formed in this climate, like Will spoke on how light particles bounce off objects.
-
@Heather-Boyd For the blending assignment I just used the procreate brush that looks like chalk (I forget the name) and the smudge tool. I eye dropped the sample colors and colored each half of the long rectangle. Then smudged the colors together until I liked the transition.
I donโt know how the real ice was formed but it sure is cool looking. Iโll add some subtle little sparkles to the snow top. Good idea.
-
Gonna do a few more studies during my morning warmups.
If anyone's interested, this video breaks subsurface scattering into several types. I found it really helpful (but I love rules for art, not just reference )
-
Blending and some subsurface scattering through a batโs wing. The tip about not having bright highlights anywhere in the translucent area was useful.
-
Finally got some time to go through this. Really huge help on the Pinterest board!
For my scattering reference I feel like I bit off more than I shoulda with time constraints this week! But after it's all said and done I'm pretty happy with how it looks.
-
Peeps are doing some wicked awesome work. Good work everyone!
-
@jdubz wow! well done
-
@neschof very cool.
-
Quick one of a gummy bear head.

exercise 04.
I maybe should have added some light under on camera light source. I was just shading on a mulitiply layer and not adding light . Anyhow it was good practice. Some sloppy edges but I'm not aiming for total perfection on these, just practice of the general idea
