Hi from a newbie in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
-
I'm a mostly complete beginner, getting a late start in the art world. I'm 37, married, with children, so it's going to be a challenge!
I've had a few false starts with drawing and digital painting over the years as a (hopefully) former serial hobbyist. I have always thought I'd be a novelist or screenwriter, but I've always had a lot more fun in the pre-writing stages of worldbuilding and thinking about characters.
By embracing visual storytelling, I hope to be able to communicate my worldbuilding through images.
A few weeks ago I began a character art course on Udemy and then sought out art podcasts to keep me motivated. That's when I found SVS (via the 3 Point Perspective Podcast). The first few episodes really spoke to me, especially the one that addressed the question "Am I Too Old for This?". Listening to that episode, and then the "Ship Happens" one, I found myself outlining a 4-7 year plan to develop myself as an artist from the ground up.
Once I finish the course I've already started, I'll be subscribing to SVSLearn and doing the fundamentals classes.
I don't have any art to share yet, but I'm looking forward to engaging with you all and showing my progress.

Welcome! I'm 36 and in a similar situation. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
-
@TessaW Thanks! Good luck to us both
-
@Basil-Godevenos Welcome to the forums fellow canadian !
Lookin' forward to seeing your art once you have some ready
-
Welcome! You are not the only late bloomer here! (I am 42 and just restarting in an art career.)
Apparently, us old folks have to stick together.
Seriously though, SVS has been great for me over the last year. It is amazing to see the difference in my work from a year ago. The forums have been an almost as valuable resource as the classes.
Can't wait to see you work.

@Braden-Hallett Woohoo! Love meeting other canucks online
-
@theprairiefox Thanks for the welcome! It's great to know there are other wise souls around.
-
Welcome @Basil-Godevenos
I am much older than you and starting out as an author-illustrator after a long career in engineering. Age is just a number. Don't let that limit you. Learn as much as you can. It is all worth it if you enjoy and have fun along the way. -
Welcome! Like mostly everyone has said, it doesn't matter when you start I also really want to see what you can do
-
@RG-Spaulding Glad to meet you! I'm curious how your background in engineering informs your artistic eye/process.
-
@Inge-Permentier Thanks for the encouraging words. I also want to see what I can do with proper instruction! I'm aiming to take it pretty slow, but I'll post my progress.
-
@Basil-Godevenos welcome!
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz thanks!
-
@Basil-Godevenos welcome fellow Canadian. I’m 55 and at the beginning as well. So you’ve got plenty of time!
-
@Basil-Godevenos welcome, I live in the Mississauga area. Glad to have you here.
-
Hi, and welcome, I'm new, too
-
Welcome! I am 42, and just started getting serious about developing my hobby into a business!
-
@MissMushy Thanks! I have an uncle who picked up painting in his mid-40s and he's very good. So that gives me hope!
-
@Heather-Boyd Oooh so close by! I'm actually in Markham, but nobody outside the GTA knows where that is :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_winking_eye:

@JoannaH Hi and welcome to you too!
