Kitbashing old models to make spaceships
-
If you're drawing something sci-fi, and you need to redraw a ship a bunch of times, it might be a good idea to actually build it.
Kitbashing is when you cut up parts of model kits and glue them together to create something new. You can also use cut and shaped wood blocks to build onto, or pieces of plastic you find(plastic toys or packaging) or buy(styrene). It's endless fun, and it will allow you to see your ship from any angle! I'm working on my second ever kitbash, I'll post the WIP pics here.
Here I've cut up a helicopter, some cars, planes and a bit of a boat. I got these old models at a flea market for about 30 bucks. To buy them new would be too pricey. I use model glue to bind the parts after arranging them until I see something.
Ive added more bits, and ive also spread on a white tamiya putty to fill gaps, and green Aves Apoxie to fill larger gaps or create fake 'wires'.Now I sprayed it with a primer, which brings it all together visually so I can really see what Ive got. I decided not to add anything else, I like it as it is.
Attached it to a wooden base by drilling into the wood, putting a threaded post in, and glueing a nut into the bottom of the model. I then painted it reddish pink with my airbrush to test out that colour.

What a great idea! I haven't done a model since I was a kid...

@kylebeaudette Very nice!

@RHirsch I always liked Star Wars, and loved watching docs about how it was made. Kitbashing was how they made their ships (though they used a lot of wood and added little model parts to that) so I wanted to try it. I made this last year and loved it, have been meaning to get back to doing another one for a while.

@kylebeaudette Looks like loads of fun. Boss stuff. I think Warhammer 40K mechs mixed with WWII tanks would be a good kitbash.

@sigross only one way to find out..

@kylebeaudette I'm already looking online now. Going to buy a couple of kits. I used to love making models. Haven't done it for years.

@kylebeaudette Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in the theater. It blew my mind - I was four. I still have some action figures around here somewhere, and an X-Wing fighter.

These are amazing. Love to see more of these.

Those are excellent! I'm a big fan of making reference.

@kylebeaudette brings it to life having the pilot at the helm. Love it.

Good morningβ
Iβm fascinated by your kitbashed speeder and have a quick question for youβ
What model did you use for the main body?
Thank you in advance for your response...

For anyone that's interested in learning more about doing this kinda stuff, I highly encourage a look at Adam Savage's TESTED One Day Build video on making a spaceship.

One thing I particular love about this is that you're looking at buying super cheap polystyrene sheets and you can literally make anything with about $10 in materials. This one of those things that I wish I had the time to do more of.
I really can't wait to see how 3d printing blows this whole thing open as well

This is a great idea! Thank you for sharing it! I also really enjoyed making models when I was 10-11 and I've done some assembliage, so I might just give this a try. I once made a dog from a mop, toy truck and a face mask, all from a dollar store.

@gfzen hey thanks. The main body was an apache helicopter, upside down and sawed off at the end.
