Webtoons for webcomics discussion
-
Hi everyone. I started working on one of my webcomics called “Baba and Ivan” that’s my own adaptation on old Slavic folktales I listened to and read when I was younger.
@Jake-Parker asked a good question on his twitter on posting webcomics about where one would post a webcomic. Webtoons seemed like the most common go to answer it seems to make things easier for webcomic creators. I read their terms and conditions but I’m having trouble understanding the lingo. There are a lot of benefits of using webtoons but I mainly want to know, if I put my webcomic up on Webtoons, and down the line I want to print it into a book or pitch it to a publisher to print, will webtoons have the power to stop me?
Below is the “Discover Upload Policy”

Thanks! -
@Aleksey I think the confusion comes from the fact that Webtoons posts 2 types of comics. The Discover section is where everyone can upload their comic and as far as I know, you retain all of the copyrights and you can do whatever you want. Webtoons also has featured comics, this is a curated section of creators that Webtoons pays to put up exclusively on their website. There are a limited amount of them, they're usually a long mainstay (some of them have been up and on going for years) and the creators receive a salary from Webtoons. Getting in there is a non-linear process: sometimes Webtoons will pick popular comics from the Discover section and ask the creator to "promote" it to Featured. Sometimes Webtoons will find a comic on another platform entirely and ask the creator if they'd like to post exclusively on Webtoons featured. Other times yet, Webtoons will work with a creator to make something just for the featured section and it will premiere there. I'm not too familiar with their exact terms and policies for featured comics, but I do know it's supposed to be exclusive. I'm not sure if this extends to print or only has to be online exclusive. It's only for the comic though, I've seen featured creators sells original merch at conventions and that's allowed. I also think the creator retains their copyrights if they part ways from Webtoons but don't quote me on that. Anyway, if you post in the Discover section you're all good to go, Webtoons owns nothing and you can do what you want

@NessIllustration oh wow this is so helpful and clarified everything for me. I was very confused between the discovered and featured. Now I don’t have to worry about trying to create my own website and just use webtoons. Ness you’re so awesome and helpful!
