Hello from Albuquerque

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is jason, I'm a tattoo artist and have been for 11 years now. Ready to close the door on that and move into illustration full time.....or at least as near it as possible. Pretty excited about it, and svslearn. I plan to be pretty active on here, and look forward to chatting with many of you.

I am always seriously jealous of tattoo artists. Best illustrators on the planet, and there's no throwing away the canvas and trying again.
-
I loved it for a long time, still love throwing ideas around and drawing it all up. Applying the tattoo is where I'm burnt out. I'm really tired of touching people hahahaha

Hello and welcome!

Hello! Thank you!

@jasonandroosmith Hi Jason - welcome!
I'm curious as to why you want to make the switch? I have a lot of tattoo artist friends and I've heard some say the same thing - they want to move on. Just curious as to what your reasons are?
If you don't feel like sharing I understand.

Thanks!
For me it's the process of applying the tattoo, and trusting someone else to make sure your work heals properly. I absolutely love the consultation, figuring out how to put together an image based on a clients ideas, and dealing with the clients themselves (even the difficult ones) but when it comes time to put it in the skin, I stop enjoying it. It's been 11 years, and I had a moment last year when I made up my mind I was going to pursue illustration, and as cheesy as it sounds, I felt like it was right, like that's what I should have been doing the whole time. Hope that all makes sense @Will-Terry -
@jasonandroosmith Interesting...I've always thought I would have a hard time working on skin...I like making mistakes along the way too... Thank you.

It's not fun @Will-Terry hahahaha

Welcome to the forums? What is your go to style for tattoos? I got a bunch when I was younger, mainly being a practice canvas for my friends. I never picked up a gun and tried. Wanted to, but never did. I just purchased an airbrush gun and started to make my own stencils for airbrush tattoos. Planning on doing that for a side gig at parties. Actually just landed my first block party. Anyway, I would love to see some of your work and wish you luck on moving forward.

@chip-valecek mostly new school work. It's been an interesting way to make a living for sure. It's also allowed me the time to work on my art in general. There are some tattoo habits I'm working on breaking, but all and all it's been good for me. Thanks! I'm going to need all the luck I can get I think hahahaha

New school is the next style of tattoo I plan to get. Looking to get a new school octopus. I am sure you can use that style and carry it over into illustration no problem.
-
@chip-valecek that's a good idea! I hope so hahaha we'll see I guess

Hello jason, tattooists have the hardest job,just think about making mistakes. It is something I love looking at but could never do. Anyway nice to meet you, drawing on paper will be easier that is for sure.
-
Hi @jasonandroosmith I had a look at your instagram you've got a really fun style, looking forward to seeing more.
-
@dottyp yeah, it's a little stressful. After a decade doing it, I'm still as aware of the permanence as i was at the start. It's heavy
