Draw 50 Things - I "think" I did it...
-
Hello everyone! I just went through the #Draw50Things challenge and really enjoyed it! I've never really done any backgrounds or anything like that for my characters and I certainly haven't done anything this detailed. AND I like it! I'd love some feedback before I finalize the drawing and attempt to add value and color.
-
I like this but you may want to add in one or two large foreground objects that are partially in view. It is mentioned a couple times in the videos
-
@Wendy-Plybon First of all - this is really good! I think you can make it a little more dynamic by doing as @rcartwright suggested - pulling an object and making it huge in the foreground. Overlapping will build depth and I love seeing Frankenstein in the background!
-
First off great job! Especially pushing yourself to do something new. I agree with the above mentioned, I would vary the sizes of your items a little more making your items drawn less uniform in size. Great job I love your characters expression
-
Great work Wendy! looking forward to seeing the value and color.
-
Wonderful scene! Fun to see all the 50 things that are in your drawing - value and color will be an exciting next step!

Thank you everyone for your input! I really appreciate it. @Will-Terry Thank you so much for responding! I started implementing your advice about moving the plant, but I have a question. If I make the plant huge on that one side, will that make the right side seem too weighted? Or does my character help balance it out on the other side? Thanks for your help!
-
@Wendy-Plybon Yes - I think the interest in your character will balance it - especially if you put the contrast emphasis on your doctor/scientist character. Here is an example of that strong foreground framing in a tree...
-
@Will-Terry Ok, awesome! That was the plan. Thanks again!
-
@Will-Terry Great advice Will.
-
Well done! It's awesome that you challenged yourself, you'll grow so much from it. I love Will's suggestions, but overall you did an excellent job.

Ok, so I started adding color. I'm going to show how green I am because I have zero confidence adding value and color to my drawings. I did do value thumbnails and such but implementing them larger scale is intimidating to me... Here is my progress so far and I want to know, am I pushing my lights and darks enough? Do I need more contrast? Or should I wait until I have color on the rest of the drawing to fiddle with it too much?
-
@Wendy-Plybon I really like it. I always end up touching up and changing my values in layers when I do watercolor. I'm not yet a digital artist so I don't know how that works but it seems like it would be a similar process. I start with light colors to get a feel for it and to be able to distinguish the objects better, and then start adding darker shading or brighter accents, etc. to that. Great job! I still need to do that challenge (properly) myself.
-
@Wendy-Plybon OMG Wendy...IF you are green... I can say that I am a seed... looking great!
-
Nice colors!
-
@Marsha-Kay-Ottum-Owen Thank you. I don't work digitally either. I'm too in love with traditional mediums. I've been working in layers and slowly pushing the contrast on each piece. I think I need to get the color on the rest of the piece though to get a better idea of what really needs to go where. I keep trying to remind myself, I can always go darker, but I can't always go lighter.
-
@Felixius Haha Thank you. I just haven't really done a scene this complicated before.
-
@Wendy-Plybon Oh! It looks so perfect and uniform I thought it was digital! Wow, beautiful!
-
Finished (I think)! Let me know what you all think! Does it need any tweaking? I feel like maybe the right foreground could be a little darker, but I also think I have stared at it too long and would appreciate a fresh perspective. Any advice would be welcome!!
Thank you, @Will-Terry for the challenge! Working through this from start to finish was definitely challenging. I definitely learned a lot and it makes me appreciate how much work goes into something like this that much more. And I'm already planning another one.

@wendy-plybon Awesome!
