Discovering "new" artists
-
I am close to addicted to checking out other artist´s work - sometimes with manic attention to details that reveal the way they work - and it is always highly rewarding and inspirational for me. I am not a big Pinterest --pinner: I like more to look at a specific artist and all his/her body of work and learn from him/her for a while. So when I discover a new one that I did not know before I feel like a child at Christmas, and want to share my excitement with the world. Unfortunately there is nobody in my close circle that has any interest in this, so I thought I start a thread here, and if anybody makes a "discovery" we can share it here.
So here is one I first saw a week ago and is already impacting my work: Szymon Biernacki
He works for the SPA studios in Spain (Sergio Pablos Animation - Sergio Pablos has developed the concept for Despicable Me and sold it to Universal/Illumination). He has this super clean, nearly vector-like style (but he works in Photoshop) with a marvelous use of shape, colors and texture and nearly no rendering. He has three word-less videos online with his process and I have been watching and re-watching them a million times and already took two aspects of his process into mine - he has been a big wake up that I need to go a lot simpler with my rendering.
And another one I discovered today (still need to look more into his work): Somnath Pal, and Indian-based freelancer that works also traditionally as well as digitally. Great sense of pose and anatomy in very stylized characters (reminds a bit of Peter de Seve) and a nice use of light with limited rendering - definitely worth checking out!

Wow, those are both amazing artists - love that whale piece, it's so fresh and cleanly done but very evocative too. Great idea to start a thread on this

Love those pictures. I will definitelly be checking that artist out.
Interestingly enough, Lee White's is someone I have been researching a lot of these last couple of weeks. Turned my ipad wallpaper into the piece he did on luminous light. His work that is on his website has really pushed me in a good way, but also showed me how much I have to learn, which is great. I am addicted to hitting walls.
Another person I have been following, and I wouldn't be surprised if people here know about her is Iraville on youtube.
So these are the two artist that have been convincing me I suck, which is good. I love both of their artwork.
-
@Eric-Castleman Yes, I know Iraville - she is Ukrainian, I think. Great watercolor techniques and a lot of nice tips on dealing with watercolor. Even if it is not a medium I use, she is fascinating to watch. Have you seen the collaborative piece she did with another watercolor artist? She did the top part and the other artist did the bottom part. I think the concept is awesome. This is just a YouTube screenshot, so bad res....

@smceccarelli yea, I saw that. That would actually be a really cool idea for this forum.
-
Ooh, that WOULD be a fun idea...hmmm...
-
@smceccarelli Great idea! And I just happened to stumble across this guy a few weeks ago and he immediately became an artist who I would love to rip off---er, I mean, paint like:
Not going to post any pics. Just seriously: his whole website is full of awesome work.
-
@mattramsey Wonderful! Such great work! And great rendering technique - definitely I am going to study this one. I love artists who can render and still keep the line. I have tried this technique only once or twice - should invest more into it.
-
Don Seegmiller http://seegmillerart.blogspot.com/ he's amazing at rendering but I'm really drawn to his black and white drawings...I love his hatching.
-
I added Iraville to my list of inspiration!
Lately I have been staring at Colin Stimpson and Daniela Volpari's work for hours:

Thanks for starting this thread! Did not know of Sergio Pablos and Somnath Pal before but I will definitely be checking out their work.
I have pretty much only discovered concept artists by name in the last year and so far my most followed ones include Armand Serrano, Paul Felix, Marcelo Vignali, Jake Parker and Aaron Blaise.
