31 Day Challenge: Jake's Creative Slump Prescription
-
Hey everyone,
I've been in the worst slump of my creative life over the last 6 months, so Jake suggested (among a few other things) that I give myself a 31 day challenge. I'm really awful at sketching, anatomy, character creation and clothing (all of which are absolutely imperative for the style of art I want to create), so I decided that for my month's challenge, I'm going to come up with a character a day. Eek! Jake said not to worry about it if they look bad (and this first one does), so here goes...
DAY 1: Gandalf squirrel
I wasn't feeling particularly creative (hence the slump) and got very frustrated that I have zero idea how to draw clothing. I didn't finish this one because it's late. Meh. -
Good on you for taking up the challenge @amberwingart! In a month's time you could be in a completely different place and feeling so much better about it - keep it up!
-
Fantastic job! Keep going on the challenge, and keep posting here so you stay on track. In a couple of days, you'll have a breakthrough and won't feel frustrated any more. In 30 days time you'll be on a total roll and your slump will be behind you. Look forward to seeing more of your work!

@Dulcie Thanks! I've done challenges before & I've always quit after 5 days, but I'm really going to push myself this time because I need it so much. It's embarrassing showing how rusty I am, but hopefully being accountable here will help with that part too!
-
@Nanette Thanks so much! Yeah, I've always given up pretty early on in other challenges, so I'm really going to push myself this time to keep going - I so need the practice! Hopefully you'll all take me to task if I miss a day! haha
-
I wish you fine Sir.
I should really kick myself in the pants and do this too.
-
Yeay! @amberwingart Great start!!! More more more!
-
@amberwingart well, you may think this first one isn't your best but, some of us would live to be that good! ..after the 30 day challenge!

DAY 2: The Jig is Up
Once again, I didn't finish this guy. I procrastinated all day & started so late that I didn't get to shade him or his environment at all. But, I'm trying, so that's something, lol. Thank you all so much for the support! That's one of many reasons I love it here. I may come back to this guy when I have time & do the shading, just because I really need to practice environments & clothing.
Oops! I just realized that I posted the wrong picture - I fixed his right arm (I'd made it attach in the wrong spot). I'll post the updated photo tomorrow after I sleeeeeeeeppp.
-
@Larissa-Brown-Marantz Thank you for being so forgiving of bad art! LOL The encouragement has definitely helped - I'm only on day two and I almost missed a day!
-
@Marsha-Kay-Ottum-Owen Ah, what a kind thing to say - thank you! I've definitely held up my progress by being hyper critical of myself. I'll remind myself what you said during those times

I think it's great you are doing the challenge. I can say for experience that challenges work to get out of what ever you want to call where you are. Don't judge yourself or your drawings, they are there to help you out of the slump, don't call them good or bad, just see them as your lifeline to get out from where you are. I know it can be frustrating, but be nice to yourself.
-
You're doing it! Awesome. Excited to see this.

I've come to the conclusion that I can't draw clothing (especially on animals) and I've gotten myself so frustrated that I'm calling it a night. No sketch tonight.
-
That is an awesome idea. Great effort on the first one that you did. Not bad for a creative slump. Keep Going.

@Jake-Parker Great advice, Jake.
