Discovering your Style Course
-
Hello All!
I’m new to SVS and happy to be here. Recently I had an unsuccessful portfolio review where I was told me my style was a little all over the shop. 🫣
As I was teaching myself Procreate and trying to get a happy balance between digital and traditional watercolour it was advice I took to heart.
I turned off my childrens’ portfolio tab on my website and I’m here to learn, grow and redo my children’s book portfolio. After doing the Discovering Your Style course I did master copies of the illustrator Chihiro Iwasaki as I love the way she depicts children and the evocative use of soft edges and colour. As part of the assignment I redid an old work in traditional medium and brought it into Procreate to finesse it. It is a lot softer than the previous version but I feel like it’s more me.
Anyway, looking forward to working my way through the courses and if anyone feels like there were particular ones that really resonated or helped push you please share!

@Sara_C Hi Sara! I relate to having a review that didn't go so well, I think we've all been there!
And it can be really hard to realize that your consistency isn't where you'd like it to be and that maybe revisiting fundamentals and deepening your skill is the best thing to do. I'm right there with you.
I think it's great that you're doing master studies! One class I'm fond of is Will's Creative Composition.
Best of luck to you on your journey with illustration!

@Sara_C Hi Sara. your traditional work looks very beautiful, very dynamic, and has a lot of character. just out of curiosity, may I ask who gave you the critique and may I also have a look at your old portfolio? thanks.
