Basic Perspective Drawing Final Project Grid Question
-
Hello Everyone,
Would someone be able to help with the perspective grid set up for the Basic Perspective Final Project?
I am struggling with it.Here is the practice of setting up a floor. The number of squares does not match the final project floorplan.
Line cubes:
Shaded cubes:
I did this using videos from this youtube series:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh8BvEVZ9sI&list=PL7xvYrkzD7N9UUEn_o15wrXZ1Z6lM9t0S&index=11
It's the same Youtuber recommended to watch for the cone of vision explanation.I don't know how to set up the grid for the wall at this point.
Does anyone have a youtube recommendation for this?
I need to see someone doing it because drawing in this way does not come naturally for me.I'm getting the book How to Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, but I will not have it until July 4th.
Any help with this in the meantime would be much appreciated.

@Stephanie-H I didn't do the SVS course for this, but I've spent quite some time studying perspective from Andrew Loomis' "Successful Drawing" book, which breaks down some very good perspective essentials (although I don't know how similar the methods he teaches are to those from the SVS course). I don't normally go full-out hardcore on perspective grids in most of my illustrations (unless it's a highly technical drawing that needs to be very accurate in proportion), but it's still good to practice and at least know how it's done. He even shows how to do the "orthogonal projection" technique that apparently architectural draftsmen used (before 3D software) to draw buildings in accurate perspective (though I don't know if that's the actual term for the technique)
It seems like the problem you are facing would be answered by this page of the book: https://archive.org/details/andrewloomiscreative.illustration/Andrew Loomis - Successful Drawing/page/n53/mode/2up?view=theater (p. 49). Btw lots of his books are free for download on archive.org.
His demo illustration might take some puzzling over and re-reading but hopefully my annotations below help:

Also you might wonder (like I did), how to determine the position of the MPs. There's probably a mathematical formula to determine the exact position depending on your viewpoint but for the purpose of an illustration, it's just a bit of guesswork/estimation. They don't technically have to be equidistant from the intersection of the vertical scale and horizon, I think he chose that in this example just for convenience, and the mathematically accurate positions would depend on the actual angle you're viewing the grid from.
If you want to geek out about the maths behind this, here's something too https://www.math.utah.edu/~treiberg/Perspect/Perspect.htm#UsingVP

@JQ Thank you for all the wonderful information! I appreciate you taking the time to write some notes on the pages. I will need to sit down and spend some time with it and hopefully the light in my brain will turn on.

@Stephanie-H
You are so close to creating a floor and wall grid!
The 5 x 5 floor grid you have is good. To make it larger just add another orthogonal (or two) to either your left or right vanishing point.The wall grid is pretty straight forward from where you've stopped. In fact all the hard work is already done! I've attached some screen shots with notes on how to build on what you already have.

Congratulations Stephanie on finishing this class! I think the previous replies gave you all the info you needed. I just wanted to say hi and that I have just begun going through the foundational classes myself! I posted my Basic Perspective Final Drawing in the Forum, but got no responses. All I can wonder is, "Is it really that bad?" LOL. Glad you got some feedback. It really looks great!

@davidhohn Thank you! Your screenshots with notes will definitely come in handy. I really appreciate the time you took to lay that out. It makes more sense to me when I see it all visually layed out.
Hoping to have a room with the items placed in it in the coming days!

@mcschweitzer It's great to have someone else going through the foundations at the same time!
I am not able to provide feedback on perspective drawings at this point since it's an area I struggle with.
Looking forward to seeing some of your work as you move through the Foundations Classes!

@Stephanie-H @mcschweitzer Yes, and I encourage you both to keep going especially when you hit a dip or an obstacle. I have found those are the greatest points of learning for me, especially through the second level of drawing the figure. Every course here was pretty difficult to do and when I came to the unique and appealing character course and gesture course I hit several walls!
But each time my work has developed and I have been able to incorporate something new into my drawing that was so lacking before.

@PenAndrew Thank you for the encouragement! Perspective drawing is definitely the giant wall in front of me at the moment
-
@Stephanie-H Yes I am sorry I didn't comment because I did not really understand what problem you had as you seemed to be doing everything right! But that was good as you had a great comment from David.
I find I can mostly do perspective but it still remains abstract at times and I think I just need to do more practical tasks with my knowledge. -
@PenAndrew Thank you!
-
@PenAndrew It's nothing to be sorry about.
David's help was wonderful! -
@Stephanie-H Yes, that's what i meant, you heard from the professional!

@Stephanie-H yes
looks perfect to me, though i would recommend using a harder pencil for perspective. -
@Stephanie-H said in Basic Perspective Drawing Final Project Grid Question:
Next hurdle will be to figure out how to be in the room instead of a giant looking into the house.
Great job! And your last hurdle is easy to step right over. Just crop in tighter.
Another student had a similar question a couple weeks back and I responded in more detail. Here's a link to that post:https://forum.svslearn.com/topic/12728/basic-perspective-drawing-final-assignment/2?_=1656513847189

@Stephanie-H great job! Huge improvement from the first! Way to go!!
