APRIL CONTEST: Design the Coolest Treehouse in the World!
-
Such inspiring and creative submissions, everyone! In response to last month's crit arena, my goals were to keep the palette bright, make the characters and situation relatable, and be mindful of the clarity of the image. I also tried to minimize the environmental impact of the house on the tree, hence the tent design. It was really difficult to come up with something that didn't look like some kind of alien pod. Nothing wrong with that, but not the concept I was looking for. Next time I want to be better about posting earlier and exchanging feedback. This month was all about pushing myself to finish a drawing.

@Johanna-Kim thank you! It was really hard to think up a "cool" treehouse. I am SO not a cool person!
-
Environmental design is hard for me, I’m glad this month forced me into something different. Good work everyone!
-
@Asyas_illos you can name it this way but I just click on the title in the gallery view and change it there.
-
@AngelinaKizz thanks, I’ll give that a shot!
-
I tried traditional mediums this time. I’m excited to see everyone’s treehouses!

I took a drive to the Sequoia National Forest last weekend to get some inspiration for the treehouse prompt... But those trees are just SO hard to do justice in pictures and illustrations. Either zoom out to see the size of the tree, or zoom in to see the treehouse. Left me "stumped" hahah...
But then on our drive back, we passed by Lake Kaweah & there are a whole bunch of partially submerged trees that just looked so cool and mysterious, I decided to switch gears and go with an underwater treehouse theme.
Another fun prompt with so many inspiring submissions! Awesome job everyone!!

@Merry-Millergass What a cool idea. Now I have to look up submerged trees. I love the mood of your piece.
-
@Valerie-Light Love this--all the kids, activities, and the feeling of wind is perfectly captured here.
-
I am really inspired by all the creative ideas shared here, and there are several that I wish I'd thought of. I didn't quite finish to the vision in my mind, but plan to. I rarely do spot illustrations, preferring to fill a page in order to get as much atmosphere in an image with help from the background. So this was a challenge for me. My favorite part of making this image was figuring out what details to show to hint at the character who lives here. This was done digitally.
-
@Johanna-Kim Oh my... You've included a whole village! Who'd thought there's even a train station up in the tree...Amazing work!
-
@lizardillo This is soooo lovely! I think you don't need to include any pandas, we can see clearly who lives there just by looking at the marks left by the bites.
-
@Johanna-Kim Very inventive, lots of story and places to explore. I really like how you have captured the movement especially the material blowing open and revealing the interior of the house. There is a lot to explore in this image and one can follow the branches and pathways like the lines of the trains. Very clever. There are lots of lovely little details in this painting.
-
@Johanna-Kim Wait he's a mouse detective? This is so wonderful! Lovely work.
-
Got a late start with this one and wasn't able to flesh out all of the details I would have liked (that's what May's for, right?), but still had a good time chasing this Addams-family-ish idea. Great entries by everyone! It's been fun checking out all the creativity with April's prompt.
-
Really adore all the storytelling you've managed to fit into this piece, @Johanna-Kim! A great treehouse for a great mouse detective!

@Eugene-Tan Hello, I really like this colour palette and the moodiness and style of this painting.
Thanks! Still experimenting with colors and hoping to settle with something I'm comfortable with.

@Eugene-Tan this design is awesome! I like the color choices and shading but I think you can push them a but more to make the subject stand out. I hope you don't mind, I did a quick mockup and included greyscale versions and histograms for each to show the range portrayed
That looks...alot better than my own efforts. Dang, lol.
I was struggling with the contrast and that definitely shows how much of a difference it makes.
-
@Valerie-Light Elementary, my dear Valerie. Thanks for the kudos.
@PenAndrew Thank you! I'm definitely a details person, but trying hard to be more selective about the which details.
@aurelia Thank you!

Here is my entry into this months Critique Arena.
My treehouse comes with a Slime Room (which gets a bit messy), a Surveillance Room (to spy on the family), a Time Machine, a Drive-In Cinema and a large ParaSailing Blower.
