When you dream up book ideas…
-
I literally had a dream this weekend of a children’s book about a cat who lives all of his nine lives every day. I even saw the cover pretty clearly. Here is the result:
Does this happen to anyone else. And would you pick up this book based on the cover? Portfolio worthy?

@chrisaakins I think the idea has a lot of potential. I would definetly pick up a book based on this cover concept for my daughter, who is seven and would love to read it.

@chrisaakins I think if it didn’t have a name/title I wouldn’t know what this book is about. As far as going into a portfolio I think it feels a little more rushed compared to your other work I’ve seen, maybe if you spent a little more time on it you could add it there. That being said the concept, story idea is really great! I wish I could remember some of mine, I like to imagine up stories as I fall asleep but I don’t remember a thing by the time morning rolls around.

@asyas_illos I was going for a looser style. I guess I could see it looks unfinished/rushed. I really like the cutout paper look with mixed media thrown it. I was kinda going for that. Oh well…it was fun to do anyway.
-
@chrisaakins my apologies then, I was just thinking in comparisons to your other works, it may not fit in, but if you’ve got many styles in your portfolio then it’d work just fine!

@chrisaakins fun concept -- like a cat version of Groundhog Day?
The cat character is adorably grumpy. Mr. Kitty totally needs his own book! Instead of a cover, one or two test illustrations would be more helpful in communicating the story, especially if you're planning to submit to publishers. Covers can be deceptively difficult to design, and most editors/ADs prefer not to see an illustrated cover on a dummy.
Looking forward to seeing what happens to Mr. Kitty. Please share more with us!
