FAUX Inktober 2020 - Who’s with me?
-
Hello, everyone! How are you all doing? 2020 has been a real kicker hasn’t it? In light of the recent Inktober drama, I choose to show my support to Jake by participating in this year’s challenge.
The same as last year, I am going to do Faux Inktober. Who wants to join me?
...
DISCLAIMER!
I did not come up with Faux Inktober. Faux Inktober is already an annual art challenge years before I chose to promote it. I know this sounds unneeded but in case someone decides to post a youtube video accusing me of stealling their unique spin on Inktober, here’s me telling whoever you are that I’m not stealing anything from you.
...
What is Faux Inktober?
Faux Inktober is a variant of the Inktober challenge where artists are free not to use inks (traditional or digital) or use inking on their artworks. Artists are also free to follow the official Inktober prompt or make their own.
...
What’s the use of Faux Inktober?
A lot of artists are apprehensive in joining Inktober because they don’t ink or use ink mediums. They are anxious that they will be called out because their work have nothing to do with inking. (Trust me. In this social climate, it happens A LOT.)
Faux Inktober is here to give confidence to those artists who don’t do Inktober the conventional way but still want to join in the fun.
If someone tells you:
“Hey! Your work doesn’t fit with Inktober!”
You can always say:
“Ah... but I’m using Faux Inktober you see .”
...
Am I required to use Faux Inktober?
No, you're not. Even if you don’t ink and don’t use inks, you are NOT REQUIRED to use it.
You can create whatever piece, using whichever materials you want, and not use the tag Faux Inktober.
Faux Inktober is here to give you more confidence in doing Inktober your own way. If you feel you don’t need it, then you don’t have to. ️
...
How do I join Faux Inktober?
Just use the tags #fauxInktober and/or #fauxInktober2020 whenever you post and you’re set!
...
I’ll be creating a thread here on SVS for Faux Inktober Pieces. If you want, you can also post your work there for the community to see. Happy Inktober everyone!

I love black and white images. So I guess I will follow the official inktober. But I love to see other artists do inktober without ink, or making B&W images.
hurra for #fauxInktober2020
-
@xin-li thank you! i’m also excited to to see your inktober pieces soon.
-
I might do mine in combo of ink and white gouache. If I do I guess I might be crossing into faux inktober as well! Looking forward to experimenting and having fun.
-
@Coley sounds exciting! For me I’m going to digitally make B&W pieces as well as colored ones in order to fill in the gaps in my portfolio.
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz good plan!
-
@Coley thanks! I’ve been really busy lately that everytime I create a personal artwork, I treat it as a potential portfolio piece.
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz Not for me this year sorry. I was even going to try some inktobers but have declined so that I can make 1-2 fall/halloween works.
All the best, loved taking part last year though!
-
@Heather-Boyd That's good too! I'm also doing something similar for my Inktober.
-
I'm doing a sketch each day this month and then I plan to ink them each day in October for Inktober. Would my pencil sketches be something I could submit to Faux Inktober or maybe Sketchtember?
-
@deborah-Haagenson hi! Definitely!
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz Ok, I added the hashtag #fauxInktober2020. Two of my drawings should be there so far. I plan to send one over each day in September.
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz Do you know how I change my photo to follow pic in #fauxInktober2020? Right now it's using one of my two drawings from my post. I didn't quickly see how to change this in Google.
-
@deborah-Haagenson hi! What do you mean?
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz When I view #fauxInktober2020, I now see my two posts there, so that's good. But at the top of the page it has a round circle with an image in it. Next to this is the word Follow. I wonder how I change the image in the circle. In my Instagram Account this is a photo of me and I know how to change it. But I don't know how to change it on the # page.
-
Time is going by so fast for me! Your fauxtober post from last year doesn't seem that long ago.
-
I'd love to try both.
I've mainly used Inktober for practice.
When I worked at Tokyo Disney Sea as a caricature/cute portrait artist, our company wanted us to complete a profile picture, head and shoulders, inked and coloured in five minutes.
A crazy 5 minutes! And write the guests name, and sign and date it.It took me 2 years to get under 7 minutes.
And then, I worked on creating a style that I was happy with.
Then, to go even quicker,...I decided to drop the sketch, and just go straight in, from the beginning with a brush pen.
A Copic Sketch, marker. That got my time down to between 5 and 7 minutes, depending on the details.
So, yeah! I loved Inktober.
This year(try to make time);
Quick sketches in ink, and maybe acrylics. My apologies for the long one.

I loved this long post, don't be sorry for it!!
This was all super cool info (I was looking into doing caricatures before the pandemic shut everything down, so it's super neat to see actual numbers!)
I'll also be doing a "not quite Inktober" this year as I'll be using silver, white, and gold ink along with the black. I'm finishing up a project I started last October that I plan on self publishing!
-
@korilynneillo Thank you!
Those numbers are only for the money making company. I also did silhouettes there. No sketch. Just cutting with scissors. And about 2 or 3 inches high.
Standard time, under 3 minutes. For the last 3 years, I have been a portrait/caricature/silhouette artist at prestigious events with world famous brands, around Japan. (this year was meant to be GREAT! All events have been cancelled)
We're hired for the day, so we can relax with those numbers.
Silhouettes taking around 5mins, so getting the likeness, and adding details is so much more comfy.
Portraits, I was averaging from 10 to 15mins each. Full front pose, and plenty of detail, with two choices,...a marker(no sketch), or pencil(no erasing). When I do Inktober, I usually draw from life or photos, with no pencil sketch. It's a great challenge! And I know I need to keep my skills sharp. (I kind of do Inktober, every month!)
I also love adding some elements from my imagination. It's good to see my mistakes, etc. Like a reality check.Great! Finish those projects!

@Nyrryl-Cadiz 2020 is kicking my butt and draining my creative energy...but I'd like to support Jake AND inktober...at the very least, I'm looking forward to seeing all of y'all's work.
