Hi, Whatever you like to draw it's always cool to see your hard work presented in a final project that you can keep on a shelf to refer back to in the future.
Last year I started a draw 100 fairies project and made it to 66 drawings in colour. Then other projects including my day job design work had priority and the fairy drawing slowed down however they were not forgotten. Last December I made the decision to create a new colouring book, improving and using everything learnt from producing The Little Tiger Colouring Book.
A few things changed, the format is now rectangle which gives more breathing space for art. The lines are wider which looks better.
I have a few more illustrations to ink and then it will be ready to print.
Here is the cover and I look forward to share some of the art and process. -
The colouring book at the very beginning starts with pencil sketches. Character ideas without a background.
-
Next, I look through my sketchbook and match up characters who have a story to tell.
I scan the sketches into the computer and start trying new brushes, get messy and throw colour down. Usually I have an idea of what colours I want to use, sometimes not. These colour sketches are purposely an experiment. Sometimes I did certain things that led to new experiments, for example I found out I liked working on dark backgrounds then did some other portfolio illustration with that in mind.Next, I choose my favourite illustrations, put them together in a file and started to work on the line art.
Repeat 30 times. Took about 3 months.
-
Some of the colouring pages. The border is something I didn't do in the Little Tiger Colouring Book and it makes the pages look neater. Also thicker lines in this book. Easier for kids to colour.
-
This is the cover starring some of the characters inside. It brings everything together.

If anyone ever wants any help or advice with how to start making your own book feel free to ask questions.
Today I finished uploading the colouring book to Amazon. With 30 illustrations to colour it is 72 pages long. On the of back of each illustration is a description or back story. Then there are some other pages, publishing pg, inside title, introduction, a colouring materials testing pg and an about the artist pg.
This step by step guide by Let's Draw with BeeJayDeL is straight forward if you are thinking of creating your own self published book project.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB8uRXQZnPc&t=2987s
I'm waiting for the Look Inside feature on Amazon to become live which takes 7 days then I will share the link so you can see inside the book.
One thing to add is after doing a project like this you do feel wiped. You need to refill your creative bank account. Back to to drawing board to refuel.
